Can anyone tell me anything about this Elizabeth Benn who, as Elizabeth Giles, Widowed Boarding House Keeper, married my g-father William John Partridge 08/05/1901 at St Jude, Paull, E Yorks (Junqtr 1901 Hull 9 d 479). According to the Marriage Cert. she was daughter of Henry Benn, Innkeeper, but the 1851 & 1861 censuses for Docking show Henry as a Waggoner/Farm Carter, while there was another family of Benns at the Bell Inn, Docking. However, in 1871 Henry was at the Bell Inn, with a new wife and step-children, but also two of Elizabeth's sisters, Eliza b1859 & Lydia b1857. There had also been William b1849 & Henry b1855 in the previous census. Elizabeth at that time was General Servant at 49 Park Avenue, Kingston-on-Hull. I have not found her actual birth entry, or her marriage to anyone called Giles, or in either the 1881 or 1891 census under either name. Nobody in my family knew of her existence; in fact finding anything about my g-father later than 1888 was quite a triumph for me, as nobody knew what became of him after he supposedly left for Australia when my father was about five. My father talked of him as though he were still alive in the 1920s, but he had actually died in 1912. Thanks for anything to add to my knowledge, FredP.

What a pair we are! I too am over tired - I got woken early this morning by a woman who had mis-dialled a phone number, she was supposed to be calling her GP (one digit different to my number), the silly woman kept re-dialling , then finally left a message on my answer phone asking for an appointment. Hope you sleep better tonight
There seem to be more children for James and Jane, but Jane's name is transcribed on some as CHAMBERLAIN not CHAMBERS.
On the birth of Henry and Mary Ann's daughter (Mary Ann) in 1870 Henry is entered as a labourer. In 1873 they had a son, Edward Henry, Henry's profession is now an Inn Keeper. You say that Henry was at the Bell Inn in 1871, therefore Henry must have taken over sometime between 18th April 1870 (Mary Ann's baptism) and 2nd April 1871 (date of 1871 census) Baby Mary Ann died and was buried on 22nd April 1870. Young Henry son of Henry and Susan, baptised 28 Oct 1855, died in 1864 and was buried on 12th September 1864, aged 9 years.
Here are the baptisms of children for Henry and Susan; William, 27th June 1849 Elizabeth 1st September 1850 Ellen Emma, 18th March 1852(died and was buried 6th November 1852) Ellen Emma, 14th August 1853 Henry, 28th October 1855 Lydia, 20th September 1857 Eliza Jane, 7th August 1859 Susan, 10th November 1861
Still digesting, but I should very much like to know whether there are any descendents of Elizabeth's siblings around in Norfolk or elsewhere. FredP.
