A little 'Griffin' imponderable.

When this query was first posted I had started looking for William Griffins' timber merchants and did find a couple, but the search has advanced and I am unable to formulate it; unfortunately if I'm not in in the beginning my now 'silly brain' is incapable of getting its head round queries.........matters not as you've had the mostest, bestest help from Huncamunca who is undoubtedly the best researcher on any FH forum, we are blessed here at Top Dog to have Jane's qualified knowledge and help free of charge. I am certain that Jane's skills are above the majority of many 'professional researchers'. Don't ever leave us Jane, please, cos we love and appreciate you more than you may realise

And if I sound soppy, so what! It's what most members would like to convey, I'm sure of that .

Hello Wendy, still night-time here but I was woken up by a Windows update so thought I'd see what was happening on Top Dog.

I'm not trying to say this William is from Newbury. He is consistent about Peakirk. I think the simplest explanation is that he is nothing to do with your family . . . which is a shame after all the work that you've put into his line.

My feeling is that your William Griffin the carman takes his surname from his mother Jane Griffin (who married John Richmond). She was from Newbury. If you agree with this line of reasoning then the next step is to look for her origins.

Unfortunately I don't think you will be able to sort out the Berkshire families purely from information online because Berkshire isn't very well covered by online records. Though Findmypast has partial indexes for Berkshire now, Newbury baptisms are not included. Hence my offer to check Newbury parish registers for you next time I'm in Reading.

Jane, how rude of Windows to wake you, just for an update .
I did wonder how both Williams could be the same unless those Peakirk & Newbury families hooked up back somewhere or other.

I don't mind if I've investigated a wrong line, some day someone will read about it all & perhaps be helped along.

I've been looking into the three dtrs of 'my' William & Emma H. to see if they married & mentioned their father's name, & also find when he died.
I believe I have found Ada,& Eliza marriages but no guarantees.

Eliza Matilda Ann Griffin c1888 married Thomas Parrish 9 Feb 1908 St Mary Magdalene, Bermondsey. [not yet seen on electorals]
Fthr William a labourer.

If only I was that well-liked, Lizzy. Sadly, to judge from the number of people who have liked your post, it looks like I do not have a very big fan club. I doubt if I can claim the title of bestest genealogist on any forum but I have tried ever so hard to help people. Maybe I have tried too hard and just do not come across as a likeable sort of person. (I do so wish I was good at making friends: I'd trade any amount of my useless knowledge for that.)

Jane, I cannot imagine that you are not well liked. I do note some people are sparse with their use of like button, sometimes it just doesn't occur- being still new to some users.
Often like me perhaps they don't click hard enough on the like button, I've repeated that action in later days when I see I have not apparently done so.

I like you Jane for who you are which does include all of the lovely work you do here for people, but you are more than a forum detective & fixer upper. Remember that & don't ever doubt your worth.
Have a little think back to other whichevers you have tackled in your life. Been pretty full hasn't it?

Jane, listen to Wendy and don't doubt your likeability. You are a kind and giving person, so what's not to like?

 

I was otherwise occupied ( 5 vials of blood and 2 hours devoted to the vampire) when I read this. I think Wendy got it right. You have helped me tremendously in the past, just wish I could have found more for you on your William Carter but it was not to be. Sometimes I just read the post and go onto the next one without ever thinking of hitting the like button. Doesn't mean the intent wasn't there. Just a bit of forgetfulness, I guess.

 

I have odd feelings about the 'like' button. I take it to mean the viewer liked the post contents- not necessarily the post person- the little messages like those above would mean much more to me than likes, although they too are appreciated & show people do read ones posts.

I'm sure there are people I've met in person & do like but haven't necessarily told them so. A hug & a warm greeting I hope does the trick.
How many people on face-book have friends they've never met? & how 'real' are those 'friends'. I've known one who actually said she just likes to collect a lot of friends, which can be lovely too in that if not actively disliking every one, we CAN all be friends. Amen.

Today I saw a tree owner who quoted 1851 source link with Jane b.1838 Newbury, Mother Hannah but Father unknown. [he was listed on census] A guess I suppose as children other than on 1851 are not listed.

Another has John Richmond as Jane's Husband & one dtr b. 1859 but no Parents.
Jane you have spent a lot of time with this post, I so appreciate it but save some of yourself for other endeavours too.

 

Well I think you are just an amazing person and genealogist the way you help people without giving it a second thought Jane. One of the best!

 

I go along with the hairy one Jane - I'm sure most of my 'likes' have come from quips and small additions to other people's comments. You, on the other hand, have an ability to do 'proper' research and set it out in a clear and understandable fashion. The help you give to our members is second to none. And as for friends......I bet if we had a 'be a friend' button you would realise how many friends you have on Top Dog.

- re #34 isn't that just the awkwardness of 'likes' ? I like online people for what they are..do for others..how they connect with me etc.
We who never really meet out Genealogy friends here in person [for the main part] are left with a word. LIKE
I've never met several UK,Canadian & US Cousins with whom I chat in various I'net sites but I count them as friends. What the heck is a friend any hoo, but someone you can appeal to, indulge in snippets with, sympathise with ,rejoice with, chat with.? Oh heck what would I know, I live over here in a new country where odd things occur.
Animals know more than I do.

I've made quite a mess of my life. Genealogy is one of the few things left that I have confidence I can do - my rock in a very choppy sea. When I saw how few people agreed with Mealymoo that I was a worthwhile member of the forum, a big wave swept me off my little rock.

Thank you all, lovely people, for throwing in a lifeline for me. When I have dried out a bit I will try to get back to genealogy.
