I am researching a clergyman with a wonderful name for any researcher - Robinson Shuttleworth Barton! Thanks to his parents! What I would like to try to find out is some information about a reference I have found in the Huntingdonshire Archives dated 7 Sep 1836. This document indicates that Robinson Barton applied for a period of leave from his benefice "on account of the actual illness of your wife and children." One John, Bishop of Lincoln licensed Robinson Shuttleworth Barton, "Vicar of Alconbury within the County of Huntingdon, within our Diocese, to be absent from your said Benefice until 31st day of December 1838." He was given this leave on account of "you keeping the Vicarage House and offices in good repair."
Does anyone have any idea how I might find out if there are other records from this time still in existence that shed some light on this illness in the family? Is there correspondence kept by the Diocese or Church of England that might help? Was there some epidemic or other cause of sickness about in this area of England at the time??

According to the Leeds Intelligencer of 28 July 1838 he moved to "the valuable Rectory of Heysham" patron Richard Godson.
I also came across his marriage in 1830 to Mis Baron of Flixton House near Manchester

Do you know how many children he had. In 1841 there are 4 with a 5 year gap between James age 6 and Henry age 1, so it is possible that one or more died between these two. (HO107; Piece: 529; Book: 18; Folio: 14; Page: 22; Line: 2)
The newspapers for 1835 and 1836 do not seem to report any epidemics or illnesses, just the usual auctions, poor law notices and a lot about road repairs.

I would suggest you contact the Huntingdonshire Archives and ask them the question, I have found the entry from the Cambridgeshire and Huntingdon Archives catalogue - I presume that's where you found it?

I wonder if his wife died and he went off the rails somewhat as there is Commission of Enquiry where it was alleged "he hath been guilty of profane & lewd conversation, intemperance and intoxication between the 18th & 27th days of December last and on other days and times past, against the laws ecclesiastical". Extract from the Lancaster Gazette dated 18 September 1841. Witnesses called and the case was adjourned until next week. Doesn't seem to fit in with the 1838 report does it. This commission seems to be fairly widely reported in various newspapers across the country. If you can access newspapers, the Westmorland Gazette gives a fuller account of the enquiry, but given that Robinson Shuttleworth BARTON is still Rector of Heysham in 1843 onwards, presumably the Enquiry found in his favour. Details of his death on 4 June 1858, but cannot find any mention re the illness of his wife.

I saw that report Janet, but thought, like you, it was an entirely different matter. If Sheryl hasn't got access to any of the papers, there is an extract of the 'event' at

There may be more about the Rev. on the Heysham Heritage web site at

Thanks so much Londoner! You are right -- it looks like he applied for the absence from one benefice but then found another "job" and did not return?? I have the marriage details to the Miss Jane Baron but that said, that is a bit of a mystery as that parish as no link with her family nor with where He was working. As soon as one locates one piece of information more questions arise!!

Janet, his wife Jane Baron does not die until much later but she was already 36 at the time of her marriage to Robinson Barton, who was 44!! They had four children quite smartly in 1831, 1833, 1835 and then the last one in 1839. She was 40 when the third child was born and 44 when the last one arrived. Maybe it is simply that times were tough with so many little children so he felt that a break was needed. Just a pity we have no Census records to see where they were living during the leave of ansence!!

I will do as your quote suggests and just keep digging! I think, though, that the material that Janet located and I had already discovered about the enquiry were not related in time, but, of course, there is always the chance that he had problems with alcohol and the sickness of his wife and children was a cover for his own ill health??

I did locate this information a couple of weeks back about the enquiry! I read extensively and wondered if it was a conflict between individuals as there is a report that indicates that Robinson Barton is found not guilty of the charges!!
Thanks so much for these links -- I shall have a look through them and see what else I can uncover!
