I am trying to find out about Maggie' early life and wonder if anyone can offer help as I am up against a brick wall! Suggestions gratefully received.

She was born 3/12/1892 in the Keith area, illegitimate, but no idea who the mother is let alone the father, though in Scotland the father is very often named. Is Davidson a clue..... in other illegitimate cases I have found the father's surname used as a middle name?

I think I have found her in the 1901 census aged 8 living with a Margaret Grant who was aged 74 so not her mother at 33 Back Street Keith. Could this be her grandmother?

    I definitely know the following:
Married a George Morrison in 1913 in Keith
    Died 1952 in Keith

What source do you have for the 1901 census? Is Margaret Grant the head of household? If so, the census should state her relationship to Maggie. If not, you may be able to infer a relationship based on their respective relationships to the head of household. Also, researching Margaret Grant could lead to clues about Maggie. I'm trying to think of sources besides Scotland's People for research. I don't have a sub for A. right now (the next best thing so far as I know). Maybe FMP. Do you have access to the 1911?

I have lots of family surnames used as middle names in my Scots line. Often the name comes from way back.
There appears on Family Search an Ann Davidson Lyon 31/5/1891 Cairnie Aberdeen father George Lyon mother Jane Milne Lyon. Looking at the map I see that Cairnie Aberdeen is right on the border or close to Banffshire. I didn't look to see where Keith was.
Just had a look. Keith is 6 miles from Cairnie.

There might be a few clues in an Ancestry Message Board thread, The Lyons of Banffshire, where there are lots of Davidson Lyon families mentioned. I have saved it and if you would like a read I will send you the link via a private message. Just let me know. Ta.

I had a look at Keith & District Heritage Group
    Code:
    http://kadhg.org.uk/
In the section on the Grammar School are yearbooks (annuals?). I looked through the list of students for likely years and did not see a Margaret or Maggie Lyon. There was an Alice Lyon and a handful of Davidsons and one Margaret Grant. Nothing conclusive.

Thank you all for some good suggestions/advice. I have spent time looking back through A and FMP but none of the messages, trees or census records seem to tie in. A lot of the census records state daughter. The 1901 census where she is a scholar states she is boarding with Margaret Grant so no obvious relationship and this is where I get the birth place as Keith. I am unable to pinpoint her in 1911 census as there are too many possibilities just in Keith area. Her parents never married and as far as we are aware she was an only child. I will have to look at school records and try to check with her direct descendants if she attended school in Keith, I had forgotten the local heritage group have a website so will pay them another visit.

Who me? I also use Scotland's people but just now have no credits left to view marriages etc. The above I copied from your clip in #11 & keyed it into Excel to keep the columns the same,- then a copy paste to forum.
