Thanks, I just found it. It definitely says Lexton on the original, also he is "living retired" although later working again, plus the mysterious Louisa. Its all a bit odd!
As for James and Ann I can't add anything. If that death of James is correct, then finding which Ann is the right one is proving difficult at the moment. I'm trying to see if she married again

Just a line to say that your George and Sarah Dye were both buried in the same grave in Earlham Cemetery. I believe it was unmarked. The grave ref no is 37-328.Haven't got anything further than B.M.D and census on them. The only other thing I have missing is the definitive baptism of Elizabeth Ann Nobbs.

    Thank you for that.
There is a baptism for an Elizabeth Nobbs 3 June 1792, Norwich, to Peter Nobbs and Mary Brown which could be her.
Also there is an electoral register record in 1878 for an Alfred Sexton at 35 George Street, Grosvenor Square, in the ward of St George Hanover Square, Westminster

Don't think that can be our Alfred as he was in Croydon from 1871 to 1891at least.
I also have the same baptism for Elizabeth Nobbs but cannot find the parish record.I also have Elizabeth baptised 26 Nov1797 St Peter Southgate Norwich and 14 Nov 1790 St Martin at Oak Norwich. Also Elizabeth Ann Nobbs 15 Feb 1804 St Peter Mancroft Norwich and Elizabeth Ann Nobbs 11 Sep 1785 St Stephens Norwich. Not sure which.Do you know which parish for the 1792 one.

Hello Annabel.Just to let you know that the Susanna Sexton wife of Alfred who probably died between 1871 and 1881was not the Susanna who I suspected died in St Olaves Surrey in 1878.The death certificate showed her being someone completely different.Bit at a loss at where and when she died now!

    A clue about Susannah/Louisa?
Croydon Advertiser and east Surrey Reporter 8th March 1879 -
List of Applications of Beerhouse Keepers For New Publicans' Licenses -
"The following applications for transfers, &c, were next made:- Inns.....The Ship, Croydon, from L Morley to Alfred Sexton" (a license for the Lord Palmerston by WB Evendon was refused!)

From pubshistory - The Ship, 47 High Street Croydon
    1869 Henry Spencer incoming licencee
1878 Mrs Louisa Morley in the PO directory
    1891 James Johns

So to me, it seems that this might be the mysterious Louisa, and she passed it over to him when they lived together. I reckon that they didn't marry. There are newspaper reports of the selling of assets of the late Mrs Louisa Morley in Croydon in April 1910, which if her showed she kept her name.

So Susannah may not have died in 1871-81? Perhaps the 1909 death in Greenwich, birth 1822, is her?
For Alfred have got the death certificate? I know the day is 2 day's out, but the papers can be a little inaccurate. From Bucks Herald 13th Dec 1902 under deaths:
"Sexton - At the Union-House, Aylesbury, on the 5th inst., Alfred Sexton, aged 70 years".
If this is the same death, the birth is quite a lot later!

There is another notice in the Croydon Advertiser of 22nd March 1879:
"Compulsory sale, removing from the premises.
    47 High Street, Croydon
Mr E Hand has been favoured with instructions from the owner, who is compelled to remove, to sell by public auction, upon the premises, as above, on Thursday March 27th at twelve o'clock. The whole of the useful furniture, plate, jewellery, and other effects....."
So it sounds like something happened and they left, leaving everything behind including personal items. It seems to fit that Alfred was "living retired" in 1881
EDIT: Just found 16th August 1879 in the same paper, a list of prizes donated to the Surrey Rifles at their shooting match "Mr Sexton, the Ship, High Street- Box of cigars". Was it reporting of earlier donations, or was he still there?

Well done on your findings re The Ship pub.Think you've sorted the Louise problem as well.
The Susan(Susanna) Sexton death at Greenwich in 1909 is not her.Her husband was Charles and she was living with her son William and Richard on the previous 2 censuses. She was also born in Hampstead.Doesn't leave much choice now.By the way.The only child of Alfred was Rose as on census but no record whatsoever of her birth.
I haven't got death certificate for Alfred who was buried (not died) on 9 Dec 1902.The age of 70 ties in with age given on 1901 census which was also 70.He gave birth years varying from 1823 to 1826 on previous censuses. It doesn't seem that unusual for persons to have memory lapses when they got older. He probably wasn't in the best of he although as he died in a workhouse.
Any further info on James and Ann.ie census or deaths after 1841? Brick wall this end.

Hello Sexton researchers ... cousins???? I am tracing my family history - my name is Pamela and my mum was Florence Lilian Sexton of St Albans. Her father was George Sexton, son of George Jabez Sexton. My husband Chjris is writing up the family history and we are going to be reading these fascinating posts. I'd be happy to share any information. We are coming home for a visit to England next year.

Hello Pamela, welcome to Top Dog
I'm not sure if we are from the same Sextons from the info you gave, but the first Person in my tree with that name was Rebecca born 1853 in Walworth, Surrey, my gg grandmother, daughter of George. There are an awful lot of Georges, and I can't claim them all as mine :)
I wonder if you recognise any names from this thread as being in your family? Post a question if you have one?

This may help ... or add to the mystery. I have a letter from Steve Turner to Noelene Mearing (Sexton researchers in 1996). Steve recounts this story:
Quote "There is a family story about the Sextons that the father gave up the business when his wife died. He had three small shops or factories so gave one each to his sons and 1 daughter. The daughter married a London and moved to London so sold her share to her brothers. The father also moved to London and made special medical shoes. He also made shoes for my mother and aunt.
I have not looked into part about the shops as it meant going to Norwich and now they have had the disastrous fire which destroyed the local studies collection. As to the father who gave up the businesses to his 2 sons and 1 daughter - could this have been the one that was born in 1838 but what about the other children? As to him making shoes for my mother, he would have been well into his seventies as she was born in 1911 and my aunt two years later.

HELP. You would have thought a name like Octavius Sexton would be fairly straight forward. But it's more tricky. I can see that George and Sarah really wanted to name their child Octavius. The first was born in 1867 and died in 1868 (Norwich). And he was with the family in 71 and 81. He married Ellen Ayling in 88 and in 91 there are 2 dts Ellen and Kate, and mum in law Eliza Ayling and B/law Fred. This is where it gets tricky. There is another Octavius. Living in the doss house in Deptford in 1891 and 1911. Which was the Octavius who died in 1917 in Lambeth?
And In Qrt 1885 an Octavius Herbert Sexton married in Islington (Free BMD Marriage index Vol 1b P493)
And in 1927 William Octavius Sexton, mason, is father of the bride Ada Sexton when she married Leonard Harris - in Hook.
    Any ideas on this?

    Hi Annabel.
Have taken a break from family tree since May.Don't normally do any during summer months.I have just done a few days lately and discovered in 1841 that Mary Goodfellow was living with her mother Mary and her 4 siblings at Dobbs Close St George Southwark. Also in 1851 she was still living with her mother Mary Goodfellow and I would think her illegitimate daughter Jane (age 14) although listed as a sibling. No sign of husband James Sexton but Mary A described as married. They were living at 44 Henry St,St George Southwark, just a few doors from James' brother Christmas.I think Mary Ann was baptised on 10 May 1818 in St Saviours Southwark to William and Mary Goodfellow. No sign of James in 1851 nor anyone in 1861.Cannot find correct death of James either.
Also did you get anywhere with George's (John) father George Sexton and his family. If you would like any help with that please let me know as I have gone back a few generations.Always helps if someone finds something as it either confirms or disproves the findings.R

    Hello again,
What an interesting story. If the George you are referring to is the one who married Harriett Perfect, then according to what I have this is unlikely to be the man. I have him born 1837, and in St Saviour's workhouse 1891. He is likely be the one who died in 1896 aged 59, so too early to make your mum's shoes

Hello Rex, I think I may have a death for James, 4th 1848 at St Olave's, burial 6 Oct at Horsleydown. That would fit in with what you found

Well I have made a stab at it, athough I have no proof I have gone the right way at the moment.
George (John)'s father George born 1795 Coltishall, Norfolk to John Sexton and Sarah Bugg, buried 1848 at St Margaret's Norfolk.
John and Sarah married July 1887 at Coltishall
