From a news article, Hereford Times 29th November 1834 At a numerous meeting of the Inhabitant Rate-payers the Town and Borough of Knighton, held in Vestry short time ago, conformably with a requisition forwarded to the Churchwarden and Overseer, was unanimously resolved to adopt that part of the General Improvement Act, passed in the 2nd and 3rd year of his present Majesty, as relates to the lighting and watching of towns. Ok I have tried reading through the 'Act' but does it jump around or what!! Does anyone know which part of the act relates to the lighting and watching of towns? coz I'm blowed if I can locate it
This appears to be the Lighting and Watching Act 1833. I haven't found a copy of it yet - where did you see the copy of the Act that you read?
Aha! According to simoncornwell.com/lighting/timeline/ This act has allowed Parish Councils to become Lighting Authorities in their own right (unless the Public Health Act (1875) is being enforced).
There is a reference and explanation of the Act on this page. See footnote 38. http://tinyurl.com/oot2j6k
