Can anyone read what it says for the profession of Edward Mason of Broad Street, Knighton, Radnorshire

    RG09
    Piece number - 4233
    Folio - 28
    Page - 7

The transcript says - Clerk To The Poor Land Union 36 Acres Of Health###

I can read 'Clerk To The Poor Land Union' but then am having trouble with the rest.

I've got as far as 'Clerk to the poor law union + board of health superintendent registrar...'

I'm sure it says '+ wine and spirits...', or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

Thanks Jan, I see you have altered the census date for me too. These mistakes I'm making are becoming far to regular for my liking :sceptical:

Sorry BH, my mistake, I gave the wrong census date. Should have been 1861 not 71. Yes he became the proprietor of the Wine Vaults and sold wine and spirits.

Ignore "and foreman" - it says Auctioneer & wine and spirits dealer. :D
    You were right! ;)

    Yes,

Registrar - he would register their births and marriages.
Wine and spirit dealer - he could sell them liquor till they had no money left.
Auctioneer - he could sell their house from under them.
Clerk of the poor union - he could put them in the workhouse.
Registrar - he could register their deaths.

I'd say he had all basses covered.

I see he was only a auctioneer when he married but a wine and Spirit merchant in 1871
