1891 census occupations

Sis

Rootles out resources!
This image is from the Mile End Old Town E 1891 census, from the Profession or Occupation column, ED3, Folio 4, and in this example it's Page 5.

Can anyone please tell me why the backwards looking L, that I have underlined in red, is there? It's not on every occupation but quite a few.
