Howdy (she says in her best Texas drawl).

I'm looking for news reports for the death of my Great Uncle John Arendall, b. 1878 in Georgia, who died from a gunshot wound on Feb 7, 1918 in Ft Worth, Tarrant County, TX. He was a barber (as were at least two other of his brothers). I found one blurb:

    Code:
The Paris Morning News (Paris, Texas), Friday, February 8, 1918, Page 7. ... Fort Worth, Texas? Feb. 7. -J. A. Arendall was ... Arendall was a barber employed at the Worth Harbor shop on Main street and was the father of two children. He had ...

This is a paid site. Before I spend $ or give them my info for a free trial, I would ask if anyone has a sub, or if you might have another sub that would give information about the event and names of his wife and children, and where he might be interred. His parents were living in Abilene, Taylor County, TX: John W Arendall and Martha Connally Arendall.

    Thanks,
    Barb

Mary Byrd Hulsey 1876 (married name)
    Anna B Cooper 1884
    Jesse James 1886

I wonder if maybe finding a tree for one of the siblings would something turn up. Why is he not mentioned on the memorials to the parents?

Just had a look for trees,- none seem to know his date of death. I can't see info in US & today is my last day on Ancestry until I save some more pennies.
I'll try newspapers via National library in a while.

    That didn't work :(

Lots of trees and other family info out there but no body knew anything about poor John? Strange.

    Thanks, Wendy, Sue and Terry. {-(^^)-}
Yes, I have the death cert and info from Family Search and Findagrave. Thanks for asking. :) This newsclip looks similar to the blurb from Paris, TX. Self defense. Um, okay.

I found a 1922 probate record index where one of the brothers became guardian of the children "Kathleen et al" after the mother was unable to care for them. I would have to get the microfilm sent to my local FHS. And I found Kathleen age 10, in a Ft Worth children's home in 1920 census. I don't know the name or gender of the other child.

In 1928 Abilene city directory are listed Miss Kathleen Arendall, and at the same address Mrs Birdie Arendall. This triggered a strange feeling. When I was very very little, I remember hearing about an Aunt Birdie. Talk among the adults, ya know. Pretty sure I met Uncle Paul at a cousin's wedding in the 1960's. Did I meet Aunt Birdie, too? Time to email my older sister and pump her memory banks.

Thanks, again for the help... and that link.

    I have a small update:

I looked at the Greenwood Memorial Gardens and Crematorium in Ft. Worth. None of the free cemetery sites have a listing for John. I looked again at the death cert - it just says Greenwood Cemetery. So I checked ALL the cemeteries in Texas with that name, and still no John.

Thanks to the link from @Chimp (many thanks, really!) I got into the Portal to Texas History and viewed every Arendall hit there - mostly from the Abilene Daily Reporter - and found a few little nuggets there to help fill in on the other sibs. Kept me very busy and happy yesterday and part of today. :D

This morning in the PTH I ran across a 1927 legal notice of a tax assessment on property once owned John W Arendall, the Dad. It names all the living heirs, including Mrs. Nora Arendall (widow) and minors Billie and Cathryn Arendall (W.L. Arendall, guardian). This matches a marriage in 1928 of Kathleen Arendall to Philip I Sterne. The 1930 Census has Philip Sterne, head; Kathleen, wife; and Nora Arendall, mother-in-law.

The 1927 notice also helps with eldest brother, Nathaniel Pleasant Arendall, b. 1874, who was an oil field worker and farmer. I can't find him after the 1920 census in Sevier County, Arkansas. The 1927 notice refers to "all the heirs of Nathaniel P." So that narrows his possible date of death. Can't find him in any of the online cemetery cites.

I never would have found these clues without your help!
    Yeehaw!

As you have narrowed Nathaniel's death to between 1920 and 1927 there is a burial for an 'Arendall' no other names or information, died June 1926 and buried at Union Hill, Homewood, Jefferson County Alabama.

Just a bit more to keep us going....Texas Birth Registrations has Virginia Allie Arendall registered or born 14 June 1915 to Nathaniel Arendall and Allie Taylor. Hawley, Jones, Texas.

Thanks Wendy. I had B.K but not N.P. Since we're getting into the realm of theoretically living, I'll limit discussion on them. I still need to flesh out more on Birdie and discover details on "Billie." Having all the associated family helps! Yay! :D
