England & Wales census: A news article written by Rosemary Collins on the website of Who Do You Think You Are? magazine last week, says the project to digitize and transcribe the 1921 England & Wales census was shut down for three months last year in response to the pandemic. However, it seems that FMP and the National Archives are still hoping for a January 2022 launch. Scotland census: National Records of Scotland are apparently still planning to release the 1921 Scotland census during 2021 – a precise release date will be announced later in the year.
It's my understanding that on Friday Findmypast issued a press release relating to electoral registers which affirmed their intention to release the 1921 Census for England & Wales in January. While 1 January 2022 is the earliest date it could be released under existing legislation, there has been some uncertainty as to whether the impact of the pandemic might cause a delay (as it has for the Scottish census). Even though a January release date has been confirmed, it doesn’t mean that the census will be available at the beginning of the month, but hopefully we'll be able to search the census at some point during the month. We should make the most of the 1921 Census, it'll be at least 30 years before another England & Wales census can be released! So if that's not reason to keep on keeping on until I'm 100, then I don't know what is!
I'm terrified and excited all at once. All the clattering noises on the day of release - that's my family skeletons coming out of the closet.
I know I’m looking forward to it…….I just wish I could find the list of those I was looking forward to finding
Although, I did a piece on a murder around my town, which took place in 1946, the court records have been closed for 75 years. They become available at TNA as of January 2022. I hope to get a copy. Code: https://terrydrayton.wixsite.com/knighton/william-edward-lucas I should also be able to get to see where the murderess was in 1921.
It will be strange to have a Census that will include both of my parents! Nevertheless it will be very interesting and should provide some some info on numerous individuals. It is going to keep us all occupied for a while! Strange, when I started I was keenly awaiting the release of the 1871 Census! In those days it meant a trip to Portugal Street to plough through the microfilm! No indexes!
Mine too, mum was born 2 days after the 1911, dad 2 years later. I have a notebook of whom I want to find - I hope when it is finally here I can remember why
Ooh, I remember those days well - queuing up if you arrived too late for the first seats and waiting patiently until someone vacated a seat Then pootling along to St Catherine's House to look at the BMD indexes in those ridiculously heavy volumes (well they were for someone as little as me )
According to FMP on Facebook the 1921 census will go online 6 January 2022. Only 70 days 16 hours and 20 odd minutes to go.
OK, I maybe a bit slow here, but did anyone else not know that we are being charge extra for this census! Apparently to cover the cost of the digitising and transcribing. AUD $4.80 £2.50 for every record transcript and $6.60 £3.50 for every original record image.
