    Maria Jane Johnson.
Born. Mar 1886. Pontypridd. Mmn Davies
Married. Mar 1906. Pontypridd, to John Winter (1879)
1911. John Winter, 31, and Maria Jane Winter, 25, living Treorchy, Glamorgan.
Death. Mar 1951. Pontypridd. Age 65.

    BUT.
1939. Maria Jane Winter. Living Glynrhondda Street, Treorchy. Date of birth 9 Dec 1892.

Why the discrepancy? Simple mistake or deliberate deception? Any ideas?

    I hope I can explain what I’m thinking....here goes.
Maybe she, like lots didn’t have a birth certificate but her Identification was taken from her baptism certificate, probably by a third person in the household. Just a thought as the date itself is terribly wrong, she would have known her birthday but others may not.

Anything is possible and we will never know for sure, but her age in 1911 and 1951 was spot on.
I can accept the registration of a birth in December 1885 being delayed until March quarter 1886, and I would not be troubled by a difference of 1 or 2 years, but 7 seems a bit excessive. Such a difference has to explored, even if we never reach a conclusion.

I've found a lot of incorrect birth years (with correct day and month) in the Register and tend not to rely on it.

Uncle Charlie's was a case in point, out by four years. Odd. I have his birth certificate, also his Marines' service records which have the correct birth date.

Thanks, everyone. It looks as if I am going to have to live with this. It's just that I do not like to dismiss inconsistencies out of hand without investigating them first. More than once I have found them leading to some very interesting family history.

Finally found a widowed cousin in the '39 Register living in Manchester, about 30 miles from where she was last noted in the electoral roll in 1925. I had skipped over the result several times as the YoB was ten years out. She was born 1867.

Only by enlarging the image could I see that some helpful soul had written above the 1877 with the faintest of pencil markings to say '67'. Eureka.
