Through following a DNA match I may have discovered an interesting situation Samuel Sexton born 1829 in Norwich married Mary Ann Claxton in 1850 in 1861 (RG 9; Piece: 1219; Folio: 62; Page: 12) they can be found in Norwich with their children Susan 11 and Samuel 2. He is a shoemaker In 1871 (RG10; Piece: 1819; Folio: 70; Page: 46) Is Samuel 40 Mary Ann 42 Charlotte Sands, a lodger, 30 Susan sexton 19 Samuel Sexton 12 William Sexton 9 Mercy Sands 4, lodger James Sands 1, lodger James Sands is, I believe, James Sexton born 1869 mm Sands Mercy is, I think, Maria Sands Sexton baptised 1867 parents Samuel and Mary Ann I cannot find her birth record In 1881 Mary Ann was with her daughter Susan(nah), Samuel and Charlotte were with their children In 1886 Samuel and Charlotte Sands appeared to have married, although I can only find it on the freeBMD site and nowhere else, there is a death of a Mary Ann Sexton 5 months before So I am intrigued by the status of Maria's birth. Who was her mum, and if Charlotte, what was Mary Ann doing? ( I realise this may be unanswerable, but I'd like to find the birth record)
I cant explain Mercy/Maria but what was the Mormon influence in Norfolk? Elizabeth Sexton along with Mary Ann Sexton are both 18 years old in 1891. Both seem to be registered in Norwich in 1872 4b 159. If they were Mormon then that could explain the lack of baptism record and the fact that Samuel seems to have two ladies.
It is also on FMP and Ancestry but just the registration. There is a birth registration for 'Female Sexton in 1866 Female Sexton Birth quarter - 3 Birth year - 1866 Mother's maiden name -------- District - Norwich Volume - 4B Page - 136 Although it looks like this female may have been a twin as there is a male registered with the same page and volume number. Male Sexton Birth quarter - 3 Birth year - 1866 Mother's maiden name -------- District - Norwich Volume - 4B Page - 136
I have just noticed that Samuel and Mary Ann's sons Samuel and William were baptised at the same time as Marie Sands Sexton. Samuel was 8 and William 5
I wonder if Samuel & Charlotte married in a Registry Office. Their marriage does appear in Ancestry's Civil Registration Marriage Index in the September qtr 1886 but not in Ancestry's Norfolk Marriages images. Not having too much luck finding the baptisms of Samuel's children except for Samuel, William & Maria Sands SEXTON all baptised at Heigham Holy Trinity on 5 June 1867, parents Samuel & Mary Ann SEXTON, Shoemaker, but there is the later baptism of a Laura SEXTON on 19 January 1896 at Norwich St Peter of Mancroft (born 1 August 1880), daughter of Samuel & Charlotte SEXTON, 142 Northumberland St, Heigham, Butcher. Janet
It looks like Samuel the son was a butcher, he married Alice Maria Norman in 1883. Samuel the father appears in 1891 with Charlotte giving his age, so I think its him. Perhaps he went into business with his son. I think Samuel and Charlotte had to wait until his wife died to marry
Although Laura was not baptised until 1896, she was born in 1880 and her baptismal record definitely shows her parents as Samuel & Charlotte SEXTON. She appears to have married a Frederick MURRELL and they are living with Samuel & Charlotte in the 1901 census of West Wymer, Norwich (RG13/1843, folio 89, page 19). Marriage registration in September qtr 1900 at Norwich reg district. Janet
