Mary Anna BUDGEN was born on 11th October 1870 in Ore, Hastings, Sussex to parents Edward and Mary (née GOLDSMITH). She can be found with her parents in the census of 1871 living at Ore Rectory Cottage in Ore, aged 5 months. (Piece 1027, folio 79, page 25) The 1881 census shows her with her family at Lodge Gate, Ore Place, Ore, where the 10-year-old Mary is using her middle name of Anna. (Piece 1021, folio 80, page 7) Then she disappears, only to reappear nearly 60 years later in the 1939 Register living with her sisters Edith JUPP and Jessie BUDGEN at 371 Battle Road, Hastings, Sussex, where her occupation is recorded as Domestic Cook (Daily). But where was she in the intervening years???? All help gratefully received.
I can't have a good look 'cause I have to go out, but have you seen the lengthy report of the funeral of Edward Budgen in the Hasting and St Leonard's Observer of the 7th August 1937 page 11? Family members are recorded, albeit with initials only, but there was a floral tribute from 'Annie and Jess'.
There is an Annie Budgen, 21 year old servant at Ravine Lodge, Ore, Sussex in the 1891 census RG12/758/100/8, that could be her. Born in Croydon, Surrey, but I can't see any records of Budgen's born in Croyden. Oh, will have to look again, as I had the surname in the first name box in the search Nope, nothing in Croydon that could be Annie Budgen.
How about Mary A Budgen, cook domestic in the 1911 census at 6 Godwin Road, Hastings? Age is a couple of years out (born 1874), but could be her.
In 1901 there is a Mary A Budgen (born 1873, Hastings), a General Servant, Domestic, in the household of Harriett Catt, which could be her - RG13/867/93/43
Is this her in 1911 RG14/PN:4732/RD:69/SD:2/ED:2/SN:174/Page:349 at 6 Godwin Road, Hastings with an A. Murray MacGregor, a Cook, Domestic aged 37 born Hastings.
The 1929, 1930 and 1931 Electoral Registers have Edward, Mary Annie and Edith Emma together at "Lansdown", Old London Road.
"Lansdown" is where Mary Budgen, Mary Annie's mother, died in 1925 - Hastings and St Leonard's Observer 14th March 1925 On March 5th, at "Lansdown", The Ridge, St Helen's, Mary, the beloved wife of Edward Budgen, in her 81st year. Her end was peace.
Could this be the death record for Mary ann? Name: Mary A Budgen Death Age: 71 Birth Date: abt 1871 Registration Date: Jan 1942 Registration Quarter: Jan-Feb-Mar Registration District: Hastings Inferred County: Sussex Volume: 2b--Page:28
I saw this one on my wanderings yesterday but am not 100% convinced. I have seen incorrect place of birth recorded before now but they have been more of the “ditto” from the folk on the lines above or a wrong county/town name assumed. Croydon in Surrey is a fair step from Hastings in Sussex – both in distance and in spelling! This looks more likely. That looks very promising. Although her age is 28, it is only a year or so out, which is not uncommon. Thank you so much.
