A 3rd cousin x 1 rem'd, whom I have just found with his wife + family gives concern as to his demise along with his wife in Jan. 1937. Married in 1924
Harold & Amy Devall ADAMS. because of years involved I asked Jan for guidance here...….

    I have the following information:

Harold DeVall ADAMS of 45 Flexley Rd, Sutton, Surrey, died 16 Jan 1937 at Nelson Hospital, Merton, Surrey.
Administration (Limited) 15 Feb to George Joseph Adams -his father, retired basket maker & Harry Edgar Palmer- musician.- father in law.

Marriage 18 Oct 1924 All Saints, Clapham. London

Name: Amy I. Adams nee Palmer
Death Age:36--Birth Date:abt 1901(her birth was registered in Yarmouth in the December quarter of 1900)
    Registration Date:Jan 1937
    Registration district:-Surrey Mid eastern

Amy and Harold had a son whose birth was registered in the March quarter of 1937 – no names as he is probably still living. Two prior children , 1931 + 1934

It is possible that she died in childbirth but it seems strange that her husband died about the same time.

Was there an accident that was reported in the newspapers or even perhaps an epidemic of some sort?

As these are distant cousins, I cannot justify the expense of certificates but would be grateful if anyone could shed any light on the mystery.

I have tried Newspapers via FMP, but am no great shakes at that, no Obit found for Amy.
A marriage for Michael found but as yet no definites for John or Mary all children given 'Devall ' as 2nd Christian names, later 'De v'.

    Any assistance greatly appreciated.

    'Thanks Jan.'

Sorry Wendy, but the Surrey newspapers on the BNA do not cover the year 1937 and doing a search on the names in the general London area for 1937 brings up nothing on the deaths. I can't find any reference to a Devall/De v Adams in any of the papers.

If you want some 'cheery' reading about outbreaks of various diseases in London in 1937, take a look the Report of the Medical Officer of Health for London County Council at

There was an outbreak of typhoid in Croydon that year, and that's not a million miles from Sutton.....
