    Well, it confirms that Ann was a tad economical with the truth....:rolleyes: I just wonder whether Robert knew anything about all of this, or did Ann just pluck a name out of thin air......she must have known (in whatever sense of the word you care to think) Robert, I just can't believe she made him up :confused:

    Ann

    If you were going to pluck a name from thin air I don't think Woollett would be very high up the list! I think he must be the father, surely ... or not, maybe we'll never know

    Yes, she was -- I suppose that was why she pretended to be married, if she'd admitted to being unmarried and the father was not with her she wouldn't have been able to include his name, so I understand -- which makes me think he really was the father ...

    Earlier today I looked at all Robert Woolletts in census returns and none jumped out as possible candidates. It is possible Mary Eliza's father was using the alias Robert Woollett.

    There is an Edward Futcher, clerk, born Fareham 1830 in census returns.

    1881 RG11; Piece: 1150; Folio: 74; Page: 20 (with a 'wife' and dau but I don't think he married Mary J until 1882, therefore the dau Ann E M age 17 may not be Edwards natural dau.
    1861, RG 9; Piece: 636; Folio: 31; Page: 7
    1851, HO107; Piece: 1658; Folio: 622; Page: 14;
    1841, HO107; Piece: 389; Book: 6; Folio: 39; Page: 8;
    As yet, I haven't found him in 1871

    Family Search has the baptism: Ann Elizabeth Mary Futcher, St Thomas Portsmouth, born 10 Jan 1863, christened 14 Feb 1864, parents: Edward and Mary Jane.

    Can't find the birth registration under Futcher or Fulcher, or anything similar.

    Did Edward W do a runner when he learned Annie Keech was pregnant? We may never know!

    Parish Church of St Mary, Newington. 20 Dec 1884
    Edward William Futcher, 25, bachelor, railway clerk, father Edward a railway clerk.
    Emily Elizabeth Cole, 26, spinster, father Charles a farmer.
    Edward Futcher and Thomas Taylor were witnesses.

    Could this guy be a key? Perhaps he's the father or even grandfather of the Robert purported father of Ann's dau.

    Hampshire Telegraph 17 February 1866
    15th 28, Berkeley Street Southsea, John Robert Woollett 86yrs

    1861, 28, berkley Street. RG 9; Piece: 644; Folio: 12; Page: 20
    Robert Woollett 82, pensioner dock yard, essex
    Sarah Woollett 46, wife, Woolwich Kent
    John Berwick 23, son in law, un, seaman merchant service
    Emma Berwick 25, dau in law, mar, Hants, Portsea

    Marriages Jun 1852, Portsea Island, 2b 672
    Robert Woollett, also indexed Sarah Berwick

    This could be him in 1851, HO107; Piece: 1590; Folio: 220; Page: 12

    I don't have time now (as going out soon) to investigate further. One newspaper death announcement named Robert as: John Robert Septimus Woollett.
