Sidney Joseph MILSTED was born on 14th August 1885 in Islington to parents Frederick and Elizabeth née BANKS. In the censuses of 1891 and 1901 he is living with his parents in Croydon. He wed Grace ELSHAW on 19th April 1908 at All Saints Church in Upper Norwood, Croydon.

    So far, so good. :)

Grace may be found in 1911 as a Housemaid Domestic at 28 The Avenue, Camberwell, London, aged 27 and states that she is married with no children. FMP have her surname as MALSTEAD (close, but no cigar...) and she is a Housemaid in the home of Charles SCHLEE, a Tea Importer. Also working there as a Cook, is her sister Lizzie ELSHAW.

However, there is no sign of Sidney. :headbang:

The 1939 Register have the couple living at 56 Tynemouth Road, Mitcham, Surrey, where Sidney is working as a Fishmonger. He also has this occupation on their marriage certificate, even though he started out as a Butcher’s Assistant.

Sidney died in Wandsworth, London in 1949, Grace following him in 1958.

If anyone is able to discover the whereabouts of Sidney in the 1911 census, I would be most grateful.

    Thank you. :)

By the way, he is not to be confused with Sidney James MILSTED who was born in Bristol about the same time. ;)

That looks very promising, thank you!

I wonder why I couldn't find him...

Will check it out when I am back on the laptop.

    Interesting side note:
The first husband of my Gran from the other side of my family was named Ottley. Not a very common name either. :sceptical:

Just as a side note, Sidney's parents Frederick and Elizabeth, had 5 children: 2 girls and 3 boys.
    One daughter died aged 23
One son died in WW1 at Arras in 1917 and another son died in WW1 at Soissons in 1918.
Just Sidney and his sister Fanny lived to old age. :(
