My friend Tim has been in touch again. I have done a bit of digging and discovered that the CHAPPLE family (various spellings) appear to be quite prolific in Devon but can find nothing about this chap.

The date of 1797 is intriguing as I found this:
A French invasion scare in 1794 led the Government to pass a bill inviting the county Lord Lieutenants to raise troops of volunteer cavalry composed of gentlemen and yeomanry. The latter were tenant farmers and freeholders. By 1798 every county had raised several such troops.

Well I am not getting anywhere fast.

I found a FAG entry for a burial of Eldred Chapple 12/12/1873 (can't find him in 1871 census)
A Wikitree has him as the s/o Thomas Chapple b1795 - my thinking being the Eldred we are seeking might be the brother of Thomas.

Eldred b1796 is on the 1841 and 1851 census as EDRED
1841 HO107 266 7 5 5 - Edred is a mason employing men
1851 HO107/1869/63/46 b1796 Kenton Devon

Checking on a baptism- 7/7/1795 in Kenton, there is Baptism to Thomas and Frances (married 28/8/1791 Ottery St Mary)

Here's where it all falls apart Thomas Chapple appears to be the s/o John and Dorothy bap in Alphington 4/3/1766, there is no brother Eldred/Edred/Edward etc. plenty of siblings though

I have to leave it for a bit, so if anyone else can see anything that I might have missed.....

I can find no more than Sue with regard to an Edred/Eldred Chappell (and variations) however there is a very comprehensive family tree of the Chappell family of the Exeter area which includes the Edred baptised in 1795. The section for him can be found at -

These Chappells appear to have been well established in Exeter from Tudor times and there is a book entitled "The Chappell Family; Merchants and Mayors in Tudor Exeter" by Margaret Rice which was published in 2024.

As there is a question mark against the information, maybe it really is guesswork.
