Trying to identify James SWIFT aka James Swift BERRY from the thread here His two marriages name his father as John Swift Berry mason. The second marriage was at the Manchester Cathedral (1871), but the first was at Dunham Massey in Cheshire (1862), so I am thinking he came from that area ... but ready to be proved wrong. I don't see a baptism for a James Swift Berry at all, and I don't see one for a James Berry in Dunham Massey He would have died in Victoria, Australia -- I think in 1905 if the James Swift (accountant, South Melbourne) probate record I found on FamilySearch is right. Don't have an age though If it is the right person Victoria BDM has mother as Mary Freetwell Any help gratefully received
FMP has the m/c for 1862 and the second marriage Licence Bond & Allegation, but just a transcription of the second marriage.
sorry, MollyMay I was just coming back to add details I left off my post. I actually have image of the second marriage from Ancestry and the second was in Liverpool rather than Manchester, and it just says of full age [although I note he is claiming to be a bachelor ] Anyway I had remembered the passenger list from 1871 says he was 27, so c1844 ??
Both James and Ann claim to be "under" in the age column on the 1862 m/c. I have never seen the word under before.
Also found a death in Victoria in 1876 for a 33 year-old James Swift, father John, no mother given. Doesn't say where in Victoria ...
1861 census joy: RG 9; Piece: 2589; Folio: 108; Page: 21 Born Liverpool, living in Altrincham, stonemason; mother Elizabeth Stonemason's widow Hopefully finding the 1851 will be a bit easier!!
Have you found James on any census? There is this one in 1861 RG09 2589 108 21 23 Church Street Altrincham Elizabeth Beary (FMP) original says Berry b1818 Oldham Stone Mason's widow James b1843 Liverpool Stone Mason Edited to say great minds!
We may be on the wrong track - 1851 HO107 2240 255 28 Higher Lord's Hill, Oldham Below Town, Oldham John Berry b1796 Sowerby Yorkshire - stone mason Betty Berry b1818 Oldham James Berry b1843 Liverpool
No MM I think it's exactly right and I have already added it to the tree!! so it 'd better be son James c1843 Liverpool in both mother Betty/Elizabeth c1818 Oldham in both father John stonemason in 1851 -- as we were looking for
So since his mother is not Mary Freetwell I suppose I will go with the 1876 death Blimey, his wife Mary Drinkwater nee Pixton didn't have much luck with husbands! I have her marrying at least once more to a Mr Jones, as she is Mary Jones at her death in 1910
I know you have now given up on this one but here's the marriage Groom: John Swift Bride: Mary Fretwell Marriage: 27 Oct 1817, Chesterfield, Derbyshire
And here may be the actual marriage of his actual parents 27 May 1836 John Berry and Betty Firth @ St Mary's Oldham only a transcript, so no idea of occupation ...

It is on Lancashire OPC - Marriage: 27 May 1836 St Mary, Oldham, Lancashire, England John Berry - (X), Stonemason, Oldham Betty Firth - (X), Spinster, Oldham Witness: Abram Jackson; John Jackson Married by Banns with consent of Parties by: J. Fallowfield Register: Marriages 1835 - 1837, Page 104, Entry 311 Source: LDS Film 1656119 Edited - too slow again
Thank you both , and I did try Lancashire OPC but didn't find it Quite a disparity in yob for John from censuses 1841 has c1817 and 1851 has c1796. Possibly a mistranscription of his age in 1851 ... nope definitely read it as 55 ... and definitely 24 in 1841
There is a baptism of John Berry, Christ Church - Sowerby Bridge 12/10/1817 born 23/3/1816 son of James and Sarah. James' occupation - mason abode Norland
