Thanna daughter of Richard & Margarita Alger aka Algor, she was baptised 7 Nov 1548 at Little Bardfield Essex, I have not come across that name before so I'm wondering if it is Latin for some other first name or a corruption of one.

    Anyone have any ideas?

I've tried Google and it seemingly has nothing to offer except as the surname of some Asian woman.

I should mention she is not an ancestor but a sibling of one so not vital, I'm just curious.

It's a complete new one on me, I can't recall ever seeing that name before and I've looked at a fair few in my time.

A bit of research and found it could come from North Africa, the surname of Alger is also found in North Africa as well as other places.

There are some baptisms on FMP in Ireland, they are 1840 and 1872. Other than that there was a mention on a baby name site that it was Danish, but how accurate that is I don't know.

I think AM is right. Thana in Arabic means thankful. praise and is used as a female forename.

There are quite a few children baptised to Richard Algor at Little Bardfield. Some with Latin names so perhaps Thanna is Latin as well. Son Johis may have baptised a daughter Emmata in 1604 in Cheshire.

Wycliffe Bible of 1382, Genesis chapter 36, verse 40:

Therfor these weren the names of duykis of Esau, in her kynredis, and places, and names; duyk Thanna, duyk Alua

No idea if the name came from here though...

i found a North African Thanna but didn't see a reference to Alger, perhaps her dad went on one of the Crusades. :)

I only found four which I could attribute to being children of Richard/Richardus and Margarita Alger aka Algor aka Algar, all baptised at Lt Bardfield.
    Agnes 1541.
    Thanna 1548.
    Margarita 1550, my ancestor.
    Alicia 1552.

However I did pick up six Algor & Algar children of a Richidi all baptised in Lt Bardfield, I'll list them for the robotic visitors. I suspect these children are the grandchildren of Richard and Margarita.
    Richdus 1583.
Egiidus 1592. This is Latin for Giles.
    Sara 1595.
    Nathaniel 1596.
    Judith 1600.
    Thomas 1602.
Quite a gap there between 1583 and 1592 baptisms so probably there are other children with a mangled surname on the EPRI which is where these children were sourced from.

I think there's a good chance Richard and Margarita had a son Richard, probably also with a mangled surname, so I'll have a try for him. I couldn't find a marriage for Richard and Margarita so perhaps more mangling at work, luckily the last known child Alicia had the mother's name noted otherwise I wouldn't have had a clue who the mother was.

Found two more, both baptised at Little Bardfield and sons of Rcds.
    Richdus Alger 1553.
    Willms Alger 1550.

I don't understand why they didn't show with the others, one of life's mysteries I suppose.

I may have found the answer late today to Thanna, the Johanna 7 Dec 1548 that you found I also found on Family search. Thinking about it I'm wondering if Thanna is really Jhanna, whoever did the recording back then did a lot of shortening names, like Rcds for Richdus and Willims for Willimus. I also found the other three children, a bit of discrepancy with some of the dates between the EPRI and Family Search.

So now this family numbers eight children.

I have now seen a PR image, thanks to the help of a friend, of the 'Thanna' baptism entry, to me it looks like either Jhanna or Johanna, so for my records anyway it will be Johanna.

    Time for lunch.
