The words after tongue look like latin to me - sorry no idea.

Rales is a medical term - an abnormal lung sound heard through a stethoscope

Condiserable time - on the death cert

I think that it reads "gait ataxic". In other words, he was very unco-ordinated in hus movements.

This would also tie in with the general paralysis - the condition worsened. :(

Fantastic, millions of thanks to everyone for help, the man was a Polish Jew arrived in London after 1885 so it is most unlikely he could speak or understand much English and throughout the report he is incoherent, singing and does not understand when spoken to, acting in a childish manner. Yes he had dementia but doubtful it was caused from a nail flying up into his eye unless the iridectomy that was performed 2 years previously started or hastened the dementia, and he most likely also had a stroke at some point. He was in the workhouse for a week before being admitted to Colney Hatch and that accounts for his filthy condition because he was described as well nourished weight 10 stone and from the photo clearly his hair and beard are well trimmed and he is not thin. The lungs "rales" possibly indicated bronchitis or early TB, his son died from TB in 1920 but a sad end - alone in an institution not comprehending what was happening and why he was there. Admitted on 1 May died 8 August... they sure knew how to finish them off. He was my husband's maternal great grandfather.... that is if his grandmother was the daughter of his son... which is questionable from our research.

Sad enough to read of a stranger in that predicament but a much different story if he was so closely related.
