Bessie was the daughter of John Way and Mary Ann(e) Hayball, reg. Bridport Jul-Sep 1863, no baptism found. In Bridport in 1871 and 1881 with family. In nearby Allington as a servant in 1891.

I think she married Bridport Oct-Dec 1893, I think to William James Ward. (The other couple from that marriage registration can be found). But I cannot confirm this is my Bessie although, assuming that she didn't wander out from Bridport and another Bessie Way wandered in, she appears to be the only viable candidate.

After this point, all is lost. She cannot be found, nor can I find a death that looks right. Nor can I find her husband, again I am making assumptions that he is likely to be the William James Ward born in Bridport Jul-Sep 1865, bapt in Allington 10 Sep to John & Emily (in fact so far I've only found him in 1881).

    :( :headbang:

    Can anyone help? Please.

Have you seen a death for William J. Ward Q2 1947 Bridport? Birth year 1866.

    Betsy Ward b. 1862 died Q2 1952 Bridport.

(Just throwing these into the mix).

Thanks for looking guys :) ... I suppose I should get the marriage cert. It would confirm my assumptions and may hold a clue as to where they are hiding. Or of course it could prove my line of reasoning to be utterly fallacious :( ... So, might do that soon, unless someone can find a brilliant record/clue to help me out ;) :D

Well, I give up - can't find the marriage in the Dorset stuff, despite going through all the marriage images for October, November and December 1893 :(I am wondering if some of the marriages for Allington are missing on the images as there only seems to be one marriage for 1893......

And why is Bessie's age given as 17 in 1871 and 17 in 1881

well, if memory serves Ancestry are missing one of the censuses for Allington too :(

I can only assume a bit of confusion on the part of the parents/enumerator ... there had been an Elizabeth (also known as Bessie) but she had died (though I haven't pinpointed exactly when, possible in 1861 and 1863) ... she would have been 11

In desperation I have resorted to trees on Anc - 2 have her father John Way born in 1650:eek:

I have not got time now to follow this through but it seems from another tree that her brother John married an Asenath Emily Ward in 1890, so could there be a connection with William James?

Ah, that may be a useful lead MM :D thank you

I haven't started on John yet, as I was following John and Mary Ann's children in order. John is next on the list -- waiting to be tackled as soon as I had given up on Bessie ... which, let's face it, was probably going to be soon

Hopefully, I will have time to do this tomorrow, way too tired now (overdid the walking home after my hospital appointment, got the route wrong, and had to resort to the bus anyway :()

Well spotted mollymay. From 1881 census Aseneath would appear to be William's younger sister - but born in East Boston, America rather than Allington - which makes me wonder if William and Bessie perhaps emigrated....

There is also a birth of a William James Ward dec Q 1894 Bridport who could be a good candidate for a possible son of William and Bessie - if anyone can find him! Am struggling so far.

I'm wondering about this from Ancestry's "UK, Royal Navy Registers of Seamen's Services, 1853-1928"

The index says....(more info on original)
    Name: James William Ward
    Gender: Male
    Birth Date: 17 May 1867
    Birth Place: Bridport, Dorset
    Service number: 121079
First Service Date: 6 Sep 1882
    First Ship Served On: Boscawen
Last Service Date: 21 Oct 1919
    Last Ship Served On: Research

I cannot see a birth for a James William Ward Bridport 1867, so perhaps he is William James Ward born Bridport 1865????

I think it probably is. Her name was certainly Mary Ann and I think she was a widow in 81. Good find.

Wait a minute! Have Grizel and Mealymoo solved it? It looks that way to me

Grizel -- I did see the birth of William James Jr and thought the same, couldn't find him, but wondered if he was the infant died in Alverstoke (I think it was Alverstoke anyway)

Mrs Moo -- was mulling over the same re: the Navy record, also the 1911

8(:-) Well done you two, a death in 1900 explains why I couldn't find Bessie, a Naval career most likely explains why I couldn't find WJ :D

... Now I just need to find the energy to go through your findings and update the tree
