Charles BOOTH was born in Belper, Derbyshire about 1833/34. He may be found working as a Police Constable in the 1861 census with wife Sarah, daughter Margaret and son Lawrence. Piece 2510, folio 100, page 26. This census states that Sarah was born in Ireland and Margaret in Canada, whereas Lawrence was born in Belper. Move forward to 1871 and Charles is still in the Police but it states that Sarah was born in Québec, Canada and daughter Elizabeth M(argaret ?) was born in Montréal, Canada. All other children were born in Derbyshire. Piece 2895, folio 58, page 9. All subsequent censuses state that Sarah was born in Kilkenny, Ireland. Looking for Sarah’s maiden name under the birth registration for their son Lawrence (or Laurance) it reveals that it was SHIELDS – their daughter Matilda’s birth registration has it as SHEALDS. However, I cannot find a marriage for Charles and Sarah. All help gratefully received.
