I have a gut feeling this Samuel Wilcox that committed this awful murder and the one that attends the races, gets the worse for drink accusing companions of stealing his money and my enquiry of Tasmania are one and the same. I can see no mention of him in the index of the 1841 Census for NSW. Unless someone can find a different origin for him I think it must be him. When considering his life prior to his conviction, it makes sense to me that having gained his freedom he just could not wait any longer than it took to gather the fare to the mainland and then head for the most developed part of the Colony. And Races, horses presumably, probably stole a horse to get from Adelaide to Sydney!
