what the bride's maiden name is, I'm not sure if Ancestry's Essex Parish Register Index and FreeReg have it correct as Paschier, I have doubts now whether the first letter is a P.

The entry is the first one in the month of August and according to FreeReg reads:-

The marriage is at Thaxted 2 August 1618 for Thomas Saward and Rebecca, a notation reads:

Thomas filius Isacchi et Alicie Sward; Rebeccha filia Johis et Jane Paschier

All I can get is what you have. Thomas son of Isaac and Alicia Saward. Rebecca daughter of John and Jane Paschier. The P is very feint and the s is the usual f. I have no idea what it says in between. :(

I would go with PASCHIER also. The first five letters are pretty plain and there is a dot to the right of the sixth which is followed by what looks like an e and an r.

OK thanks all, it's just that I cannot find the marriage of her parents Johis and Jane, it made me wonder if the transcribed surname and my interpretation of the image was correct. At least the families match, I cannot find the marriage of Isaac Saward and Alicia either. :headbang: :D

These Sawards and their associated families have been a right royal pain as far as marriages go.

Found what I feel sure is Rebecca's father and uncles and aunts all 3 baptised 5 Nov 1558 at Thaxted, the surname in the Image looks pretty clearly Paschier. This is from Family Search.
Also found 2 other children at Thaxted.
    Margareta 26 Jan1561.
Johes bap 25 Sep 1562. He is probably the husband of Jane and the father of Rebecca.
No sign of Rebecca or the marriages of Johes & Jane or the parents of the above children.

Both Ancestry & FMP have the baptismal transcription at Thaxted on 25 September 1562 of a Johannes PASCHIER, so if he is the same John who married Jane, the marriage would probably be sometime after 1580. Although having said that, there is also the transcription of a baptism at Thaxted on 5 November 1558 of a Johannes PASCHER with no other details. Snap Derek, you are quicker than me at finding this info! Not that I have managed to find a marriage either just a burial for a Johes PASCIAR on 10 December 1590 at Thaxted on Family Search.

    Hi Janet,

I also found that burial, quite a useful find because it gives another variation of the name, perhaps some variations of that spelling might help but then again ..... I was wondering yesterday whether my non EPRI searches on Ancestry would have included Quaker or other Non conformist info so I'll have a look in Ancestry to see if it's a separate database.

I'm thinking that the John Pasciar buried in 1590 might be Rebecca's grandfather, if I can find some of Rebecca's siblings there might be a clue.

I've just realised I haven't had a look in The One Name Guild, another 'to do'.

I had a look in the Guild of One Name Studies and found a guy who has interests in Patience, Pashon and Pashion names and no doubt other variations, he mentions his lot were in the north east of Essex, that's where Great Easton is, also Thaxted, Essex. I've sent him a message via the guild, just have to hope he's still alive and still interested. :D

If his lot and mine link up I would expect he is at least as far as I am, just hoping he's stumbled across the marriage of John Pashion/Patience and Mary.

I'm starting to wonder if Paschier is another variation of Pashion/Patience, not that it matters, can't find John and Mary's marriage under that variation either. :D

Paschier and Pasciar sound a bit French to me, I wonder, way back.

It worked, look after those fingers I might need their magic again.

I had an email from the guy yesterday evening, our Patience, Pashion, Payson etc lines do link, unfortunately he stems from a different branch of the tree, so he doesn't have the pre 1695 John Patience/Pashion and Mary marriage. I have asked if he knows of anyone who might know of the marriage, probably a vain hope but worth a try.

Perhaps you will cross those fingers again for me. :D

    Regards.
