Can't find the marriage

    A bit of supposition here.

    If he married Julia then they split up.

    Put a notice in the paper in 1909 of the marriage but not actually get married.

    Lilian dies in 1919 (everyone thinks his wife is dead)

    Leaves him free to marry Louisa E Butler legally (or at least in the eyes of those that know him) in 1923.

    Lilian's sister Kate married John Kirby in Bradfield, Berkshire in 1917. Kate's husband was already married. His full name was John Kirby Shrimpton but he dropped the Shrimpton to marry Kate.

    They certainly don't make it easy do they.
