Caroline Miller born about 1845, married Edward William Skilton on 11 August 1867 at St Mary Magdalene,Peckham, Surrey. I've a copy of their marriage certificate.
In it the Father of Caroline is given as Robert Miller, occupation Tailor, and one of the witnesses was Thomas Miller. Caroline and Edward both give their residence as "in the Parish"
I would like to trace Caroline's parents and then go further back. I've looked at records for Robert Miller in 1851 and 1861 census for Surrey, and surrounding counties of Kent and Middlesex. With no luck.
In the 1871 census for Lambeth, Caroline (now Skilton) doesn't give any place of birth.
    Can anyone help please?

There are three Miller children baptised on 8 November 1846 at St. Bride, Fleet Street, London - parents Robert and Caroline. Robert is a Tailor.

Walter Robert, Caroline Susan (born 22 Jan 1844) and Eliza Ann.

    A possibility?

Ah, the marriage of Caroline and Edward, gives her name as Caroline Susan :)

The address given for the parents for these 3 baptisms is 7 Gunpowder Alley.

In St Brides Burial Register for 20th October 1844 there is an entry for Robert Miller of Gunpowder Alley aged 72.

Charlotte Miller: Baptism at St Bride's, Fleet Street, City of London 16th February 1845.

Charlotte Maria daughter of Robert & Susannah Miller of 7 Gunpowder Alley. Father's occupation: Tailor.
Born: 11th June 1834 (sic). Note that '1834' is not the number of the entry but does appear to be the year of birth. It's written so confidently that it's hard to believe it's a slip of the pen. However if it really was 1834 the date doesn't sit easily as a 'within county' birth in the middle of 'out of county' births.

N.B. When a birth in the City of London says 'not born in County', I have found that this sometimes means that they were born in Middlesex which can mean they were born less than 1/2 a mile (often much less) from the City of London address.

There is the death of a Susannah Lydia Miller in West London Registration District in the October-December Quarter, 1844.
St Bride's was in this Registration District.

And is that James Miller his brother in the entry below?

And Walter Miller on the next page?!

N.B. Falls Cray must be 'Foots Cray'.

And Ancestry have just loaded a lot of records for Bexley, Kent. I see that there's an interesting marriage in East Wickham in 1819.

Robert Miller, widower, married Susan Stansbury*, spinster at St Michael's, East Wickham, 7th November 1819.

    * possibly Stanbury - see the bold signature of the witness John Stanbury.

Blow me - Robert Miller is a witness to the marriage immediately above.

So his first marriage could be to Hannah>

Baptism of Edward Miller at St Mary the Virgin, Bexley 27th December 1814. Son of Robert and Hannah Miller. Father's occupation: Taylor (sic).

A Hannah Miller, aged 35, was buried in St Mary's, Bexley on 6th March 1817. This fit in nicely with Robert's 1819 marriage.

I see there is an Edward Miller, aged 36, Tailor, born Kent living in Finsbury with 2 sons (Edward,12 & Henry,9) in the 1851 census: HO 107 Piece 1523 Fol. 103 Page 6.

So Edward Miller, tailor, son of Robert Miller, tailor, married Sarah Grew at St Pancras on 20th August 1837. Edward and his wife were "21 & upward" which fits in quite nicely with his baptism and therefore implies that Hannah was his mother.

Edward & Sarah's son Edward George was baptised at St James, Clerkenwell on 17th June 1838. Sarah's name is given as Sarah Ackman Miller.

Their son Henry was baptised Henry Mouatt** Miller at St Mary Islington on 1st May 1842.

**My guess but it doesn't look right at all.
