can anyone help me? im looking for information on alfred chard who i think is from whitchurch canocorium, originally then moved to devon. he married mary ann loveridge who lived to be over 101 years of age! Any hope would be appreciated regards steve
Hello Steve - welcome to Genealogy Specialists. Do you have any more information about Alfred, please? Roughly when was he born and when did he marry Mary Ann? If you tell us all that you know about him, then we will not be telling you things that you already have. Oh! By the way - could you pop into your profile and compete your location box, please?
Aha! I found the marriage: December quarter 1883, Bridport registration district, volume 5a, page 855.
he had a daughter called Florence who married my great great grandfather down in plymouth devon in 1914
They married at Burton Bradstock: there's a scan of the original parish register in Ancestry's 'Dorset, England, Marriages and Banns' collection. Alfred Chard, 28, bachelor, Seaman R.N., Burton Bradstock*; son of George Chard, carpenter and Mary Ann Loveridge, 31, spinster, Burton Bradstock*, daughter of Isaac Loveridge, labourer were married after banns on 20 December 1883. Both signed their names, as did the witnesses, Henry Hitch(cock?) and (Elizabeth?) Churchill. *this is where they were living at the time of the marriage, not necessarily where they were born. Census returns should shed some light on their birthplaces.
We try not to hang around! Bearing in mind that you said that he came from Whitechurch Canocorium, which falls in the Bridport registration district, this could be his birth: September quarter 1855, Bridport registration district, volume 5a, page 378, which would then make him 28 when he married. Do you have the marriage certificate as that should provide his age and name of his father. If not, give us a shout and we will explain how you can obtain one. Edited to add: I see that Huncamunca has found the marriage, which confirms that he was aged 28.
Hi Steve I cannot locate a baptism for Alfred, but have found him in various cenuses which confirm birthplace of Whitchurch Canonicorum. Do you need details of these? I can also confirm from the 1861 census that his mother was Elizabeth, she was widowed at this time and had 4 other children with her (the eldest was 19) Looking on FreeBMD brings up two possible marriages and deaths for George in the Bridport area
Sorry to be a pain ... but i have another query! if anyone can help out there im looking for information on gladys may chard, i believe she was two months old in the 1901 census from there on i cant find any other info? This ancestry IS GREAT and sometimes you hit a brick wall!
Her birth was registered in the Devonport registration district in the March quarter of 1901, volume 5b, page 275 - if you want to order the certificate.
Class: RG13; Piece: 2106; Folio: 77; Page: 30. Is this the one? Daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth Chard 15 Granby St.A large family with 9 children. The suggested records shown on Ancestry show a death in 1921
ahh there lies a bit of a mystery! because she was alive at least untill her sixties and she was born to thomas and elizabeth 15 grandby street
Did she marry at all or would her death be registered under her maiden name? Edited to add: there is a death registration for a Gladys Chard in the December quarter of 1962, aged 61 (which would fit) in the Winchester registration district, volume 6b, page 822
Death reg Gladys M Chard mar 1921 age 20 Devonport 5b 423 I can only find 1 birth reg for Gladys May Chard as #12
There is a Gladys Chard who married a Mr Sparks, but I don't think she's the one born in 1901. Gladys N.M. Chard married Ernest E. Sparks in the St Germans district in 1931. A Gladys Nellie M. Sparks died in 1983 aged 71; the death index gives her d.o.b. as 26 January 1912. So she is probably the Gladys N.M. Chard whose birth was registered in the Devonport district in the first quarter of 1912 (mother's maiden name Doyle).
Steve - you would need to get some certificates probably to confirm or knock out this marriage. What was the basis for your thinking that she married some chap called Sparks?
i have a picture of gladys when she was older married with children and i have met her son, but its still a mystery?
