Don't know what this is so didn't know which bit to post in

Idle curiosity, found in Probate record from 1951

My understanding is that a Chargehand was in charge of a team of workers, but one down from a Foreman. :)

    Hmm.

Oxford English Dictionary cites 'chargehand - a worker, ranking below a foreman, in charge of others on a particular job'.

There are references to printing elsewhere, where the chargehand is above 'journeyman' status.

The foreman gets an office, next comes the charge hand and then the leading hand.

Indeed it is, I used to be a Chargehand years ago. Wouldn't do it again thank you. You got "IT" from the bosses and from the workers. I usually got in trouble for working when I should be making sure others worked, but I felt that if I wasn't prepared to get my hands dirty how could I expect the workers to do their best. We were a great team and always got the work out on time. :)

I think that's about the only thing I've got to blow a trumpet about :)

My husband was a chargehand many years ago.
He was in his early twenties and the team he was in charge of were middle aged women. Ha! Ha!
    They gave him hell!
    Good training though!

Reminds me of the time when I was a student in the early '60s and worked during the summer vacs. at McVities (biscuits). Used to feel so sorry for the poor (young, male) charge-hand who was teased mercilessly by the women on the team I worked with.
