How likely is it that a Lass born & baptised in 1906 Dec. Q. Bermondsey & present in 1911 census with family does not show up in GRO or FreeBMD records? siblings before & after are there entered. A slip of the Parent or a lapse with the cleric doing Baptisms? Who would have been responsible back then? It is ofcourse a 'Smith'. Maria Elizabeth.
Have you checked under Elizabeth Maria? Or even just plain Maria? I have one who was baptised under one name and registered under another, but similar. What was the mother's maiden name?
Tuh! The closest that I can find is a Maria Elizabeth DOBSON with the MMN being SMITH whose birth was registered in St Olave Bermondsey in the December Q of 1907.
Perhaps a badly written name might be responsible? I sent to the Chelmsford Registration Office for a Searles birth certificate, I received a letter and copy of the rego entry, the letter stated that Searles cert of the date couldn't be found only one for Pearles, which they sent. When I checked the copy I could see the P was in fact a S, just not very well written, backed up by parent names etc, the CRO agreed with me and sent a cert with the name Searles.
I have sometimes brought up a close image on freebmd and then trawled the surname and dates and found one i needed not put on index bit time consuming but worthwhile
My latest find yesterday, showed me why I couldnt find later records or a marriage for a child found on FreeBMD & RGO as Arthur William but Baptised as William Arthur which is also how his death notes list him a year later. Depends I guess on who registered the child & state of mind at the time.
M It's certainly possibly as I have a relative that doesn't come up and we have the baptism and birth certificate. We did ask about it and were told that she wasn't registered, then after seeing the certificate changed their minds.
