I have had a request for information on the Clacks family of Witney, who are said to have owned or managed a pub, probably around 1900-1922. Before I start running through the trade directories I just thought I would ask if anyone knowns which pub it might have been?

Maybe you can find them on the 1901 and 1911 censuses.

    Hi euryalus..
I'm afraid I am not much help, however I did look through the 1911 census for Clack in Witney and all the ones of adult age in 1911 appear to be farmers, in farm related occupations and one family owns a marine supply store. A first name may help :)

That is what I am finding. It is possible that the lowest grade of pubs - often described as "beer shops" - are not always listed by name in the trade directories. I am trying to find some firmer details regarding full names and dates.

In the Oxford Journal of 4th August 1900, in the licensing news, Witney Petty Sessions, - Occasional licences were granted to John Widdows, of the Swan Inn, Bampton on the occasion of a cricket match on August 6th and to Emma Clack. of the New Inn Bampton, on the occasion of the Foresters' fete
I don't think Bampton is too far from Witney, so could this be the family?

    1901 census...
    1901 Census
    CLACK, Emma
    WITNEY, Oxfordshire
    RG13 piece 1394 folio 34 page 4

She was a widow, innkeeper, age 50 and the pub was on High Street in Brampton
Her 29 year old single daughter, Elsie lived with her. Elsie was a dressmaker..

In 1911 the address is New Inn, High street
It also states she had 4 children born alive and still living ( this has been crossed out as she is still a widow. )

    Hi euryalus
Do you know if "Estcourt James Clack" born at Oxford in 1906, and son of James a Thames Navigator is connected to the Witney Clacks.
