If searching for WW2 casualties be sure to check the CWGC, as some records on Find My Past and Ancestey use Army Roll of Honour 1939-45 database © Naval and Military Press Ltd 2010. I have found one that is incorrect on this last database. Although I have found incorrect death dates on CWGC too.

    Who do you trust?

CWGC have date of death, location of memorial.

I wonder if the first was the date the chap was wounded/the battle took place and the other was when he died from his wounds....

    Just a thought...

    Another thought...

I wonder what would have been reported in the newspaper of the time. There is a 6 month difference so was the family notified in the interim or was it not until after the later date?

I can't find anything in the on-line papers, but the 6th June 1944 was D-Day.
I have found Royston's death recorded on a couple of sites, and both give the 6th June. I still can't make up my mind whether the 6th June would be recorded as the date of death because it was D-Day, or whether he was wounded and died later - but I think it more likely that he died on D-Day.

Have you accessed his records on National Archives?
They are free here as long as they have been digitised.

There is this from the Britsih Army Casualty List 1939-45
The heading is killed in action, and the date is in a column headed 'date of casualty'
