John Cox baptised Brosley Shropshire in 1806 married Elizabeth Powell in Tipton, Staffordshire in 1831.

John and Elizabeth lived in Tipton with their children:
    1841
    • Mercy (transcribed as Nancy) b. 1832 (Mercy Powell Cox baptised 1832 in St Martins, Tipton)
    • Thomas b. 1834 (Thomas Powell Cox baptised 1834)
    • William b. 1838 ( William Smith Cox baptised (1838)
    • Joseph aged 10 mths
    1851 (HO107/2029/f119/p17)
    • Mercy
    • Thomas
    • William
    • Joseph b. 1840 Tipton, Staffordshire
    • Josiah 7 mths born Tipton, Staffordshire
    1861 ( RG9/2041/f65/p18)
    • Thomas
    • Henry L. b. 1841 Tipton, Staffordshire, railway clerk
    • Josiah b. 1851 in Tipton
1871 John has been widowed. He died in 1873. Record of probate named Thomas Powell Cox. I have records for Mercy, Thomas and William but have been unable to trace the remaining children after 1851/1861 nor find evidence of their birth/baptism.

    Help please with Joseph b 1840, Josiah b. 1850 and Henry L b 1841 ( Could he be Joseph?)

This might be Joseph (1840ish) in 1861, although the age is a couple of years out:
    Piece 2041, folio 105, page 12
Joseph COX, Head, 23, b Tipton
Ann COX, wife, 22, b Tipton
Sarah COX, dau, 1 b Tipton.

The occupation has been recorded against Ann's name (Roller) but I think that the enumerator was just being neat and tidy.

There were three Joseph Cox baptised in St Martin's Tipton in 1838. None to John and Elizabeth and none that I've found in 1840. I have also been following Joseph Cox b 1839, iron puddler. RG9/2041/f69/p19. He married Sarah from Sedgley and is living very close to John Cox in 1861. I have found several marriages between a Sarah and Joseph Cox. Unfortunately all have different fathers.

Heinry L Cox (transcribed) suddenly appears in the 1861 census aged 20. Trouble is I can find no evidence he actually existed. The more I look at the original handwriting the less convinced I am his name was Heinry  Help please with the fourth name under Cox.

I've searched for Henry. The only member of the family I cannot account for is Joseph.

A little late to edit. The first letter is possibly an H. A Samuel Harrison on the same page begins with a similar flourish. RG 9/2041/f65/18

I think you should be looking for Josiah Cox, not Joseph. Lots of Henry L. Coxes pop up but none around 1840. Can you share the birthplace?

Looking around he comes up as Henry b.Walsall Is that yours?

Hi Wendy, Josiah is on the census below 'Henry'. I have another thread under Staffordshire - Cox family Tipton.

Slow to post. Patten Walsh has supplied details. Is the general consensus the name is Henry?

Pardon Stafford, had the wrong Henry, I see you look for a Joseph as well as Josiah? So was Heinry L registered as Joseph? There are 3 on FreeBMD between 1838-1840.Stourbridge, Wolverhampton & Kings Norton.

There were three Joseph Cox baptised in Tipton in 1838. None to John and Elizabeth. I've been wondering if Henry is Joseph although their date of birth are out by 2 years.

Could a kind moderator merge my posts please?

    • Eureka moment crazycatlady22,? I ignored that one earlier & now am not sure where, there was a Joseph L.cox b.1841 via Familysearch. I've been all over the place looking for Josephs- marriage - census- electoral rolls, in between little housey jobs.
    • Stafford, have you a definite Joseph in mind via censuses? Must his wife definitely be a Sarah or may it be the Ann found I think by Daft Bat? The pudler rather put himself out of action.

    Yes Please :)

Members of the Cox family were Methodists. The most notable were Stephen and Josiah Cox. Josiah (not the one who disappears in this family) was a Missionary in China.

I have accounted for William Smith Cox baptised in St Martins. Can I assume he was rebaptised in the Wesleyan Chapel?

I like the look of Joseph Lawry Cox. The children's middle names are the same as their mother Powell and Grandmother Smith. I'll have to investigate Lawry to see where it fits.

Gosh this is moving fast. All speculation re Joseph after 1851. Without a marriage and father's name I'm stumped. Too many Josephs born in Tipton circa 1838.

If Henry L is Joseph Lawry he worked as a railway clerk in 1861.
