Hi! I'm new to this site but hoping someone can help me out. Im researching a Prideaux family, and seeking the parents of Alfred Prideaux who died 1947 in West Glamorgan. He was born in 1877 in Sidmouth, Devon if I am correct. The bmd only gives me the index record so I have no parent names and I'm a bit too far away to have a look can someone help point me in the right direction?
    Thanks!!!

No maiden name is given for the Alfred that Ma found in Honiton, Devon in post # 3. That could mean either it couldn't be read or none was given, I think.

Wow! So I think my Alfred is the one in the workhouse in the 1881 census since he was born in Sidmouth in that year. He is the father of Brinley, so the 1911 census in Swansea looks correct! Is there any possiblity parents names or on either his actual death certificate the marriage certificate? I'm not familiar with what is provided on those forms. I'm guessing he married Miriam John since Miriam is the wife in 1911. Thanks so much! You all are amazing!

His parents names will be on his birth certificate but given that Elizabeth is unmarried on the 1881 census, it maybe that no father is listed on the certificate.
Marriage certificates do have a space for father's name and occupation. This could be blank if not known or sometimes the name would be made up if they wanted to avoid others knowing that they were illegitimate.

Google Honiton Workhouse for images and advice on records.

Thank you so much! I'll google the workhouse and see what I can find! I was hoping parents were on death records like here in the US but you're right, and it could be blank. I am wondering if Elizabeth is the Betsey in the 1861 census. Looks like in the poorhouse there's an old William Prideaux also, who is listed as a tailor. I whine William had a son Samuel Prideaux, which would possibly make him Elizabeth's grandfather?? Very difficult family I'm working on lol!

William, Alfred's brother, has no mothers maiden name either. With Elizabeth being single, I would bet that both boys were born illegitimate.

Alfred's death is registered in 1947 Glamorganshire as you say.

Alfred's wife Miriam according to the 1911 census says she was 28 years old, giving a birth year of 1883.

There is a death in Swansea in 1912 for a Miriam Prideaux born 1883 aged 29. Looks like Miriam died the year after the 1911 census.

So if the Alfred who died in a Glamorgan is the same Alfred who was in the Honiton work house then his mother was Elizabeth and he was likely illegitimate. Given that Samuels daughter Betsey's brothers name was Alfred, there's a change Betsey is Elizabeth and the old William in the work house is her grandfather... If I've got that right! So I need to find out if Alfred in Honiton is the same Alfred in Glamorgan. The 1911 glamorgan census states that he was born in Sidmouth, so this very well may be the same Alfred!

And if Alfred in Glamorgan married Miriam John, then marriage record should tell parents names, right?

Marriage records show for each person
    name
    age
    Abode
    Occupation
    Fathers name
    Fathers occupation

It won't tell you the name of the mother.

As, I think, Alfred was illegitimate, he may not have his fathers name or occupation. But as he seems to be with his grandfather he may use his name to cover any stigma.

So basically if I get birth and marriage and combine these census records, I should be able to deduce it. Because if father is blank on all of them, or a known grandfather, we know what the deal was. The name doesn't seem all that popular with the given information so I can pretty much follow the Sidmouth, Hontion, Glamorgan track. I think lol!

I cannot tell you how helpful you have been! I've not researched in Wales before and I'm working on a tree for a friend, trying to navigate the area and records is very different that here. Thank you!
