The cuckoo makes its first appearance in our folklore today. In some parts of Britain it is considered unlucky to hear one before April 6th, in other parts it is preferred to wait until the cuckoo fairs on 14th April – or later. This is when legend has it that an old woman will appear and release the first safe-to-hear cuckoo from her basket. 
But once heard…
It is very lucky if you turn your money in your pocket when you first hear it – but very unlucky if you hear it when you are in bed. Mind you, not many people take money to bed with them…
Oh yes – if you are looking at the ground at the time, you will be dead within the year.
However, if you are in love, the number of times that the cuckoo goes “cuckoo” tells you how many years it will be before you get married. Mind you, if you are old, it represents the number of years before you die…
With all this going on, it’s no wonder that the cuckoo has no time to build a nest!
