In 1841 Edwin, age 5, was in a household headed by George Westlake, b c 1791, and Ann, b c 1791. Also included was Charlotte Westlake, b c 1823. Living in Wellington. In 1851, Edwin, aged 13, "grand son", was living in a household including Charlotte, b c 1824, now married to John Greedy, b c 1826, together with Ann Westlake, b c 1788, widow, " mother-in-law." Living in Wellington I am looking for any reference to Edwin outside these dates.
George Westlake and Ann Winter married Wellington 24/10/1814. GENUKI Wellington marriages. I think Edwin may have been the son of either Hannah or Ruth, daughters of George and Ann. I also have a feeling that Edwin is either registered at Tavistock in 1838 March or Exeter Devon June 1838. Freebmd It looks like Hannah and Ruth were born in SouthLeigh Devon but baptised in Wellington. Hannah 6/8/1815 born 18/7/1815 South Leigh baptised Wellington Methodist Ruth 8/11/1815 born 27/7/1818 ditto Mary 4/11/1821 born 4/5/1821 ditto Charlotte 7/7/1823 born 20/8/1823 ditto George 19//4/1829 born 5/10/1826 ditto Ann 19/4/1829 born 6/3/1829 ditto All baptised Wellington Methodist Can’t find a baptism for Edwin nor anything after 1851 but there a few Edward Westlake. Edwin and Edward are often interchanged. Of course there is always the chance that he was the son of Charlotte...she would have been 15.
Is this Edwin? Marriage of Edwin GREEDY June 1874 Welllington Somerset. 5c 601 372 If so then Edwin possible son of Charlotte who married John Greedy.
Thanks, Sue. I had considered the possibility that Edwin was the child of one of the daughters of George and Ann. I managed to trace their marriages and looked to see if Edwin was with either of them in 1861 but no luck. I have checked out the two 1838 births on GRO Index. Both appear to be legitimate with named mmn. Not quite sure who got married in 1874, but looking at 1881, Edwin Greedy may have been born in Taunton in 1854. In 1871 John and Charlotte Greedy had a son, Edwin, aged 6. I have wondered if Edwin might have been corrupted into Edward. Unfortunately Westlake is quite a common Westcountry name and, given his apparently unsettled start to life, Edwin may not have been too sure where, or when, he was born. I am intrigued by the Southleigh connection. The only place of that name I have so far traced in Devon is some 24 miles from Wellington which seems quite a way repeatedly to travel at that time for baptisms. The search goes on. P S. Have just seen your latest post. We agree.
One particular Gt. Uncle of mine Albert Edward Martin was torn between Edward & Edwin. Edward on marriage. & Bapt. of son Albert Edwin. Name varied on marriages of children. Most often just Albert E.
