I know some years ago, and in another place, I have asked about Eli before, but over 4 years have passed since then and there may be something new out there that might just be available now.

Eli Cotton was born 3/5/1855 in Shoreditch son of Eli (1819-1878 and Elizabeth 1824-1898)
1861 RG09/235/56/27 in Shoreditch with family (enumerated as Cotten)
1871 RG10/453/40/13 in Shoreditch with family (enumerated as Elis)
1878 married at Haggerston All Saints to Emma Laura Thompson occ. hatter
1880 5/10 son born Eli Henry bap. 7/11/1880 St John Hoxton - Eli's occ traveller
1881 RG11/264/7/7/ Islington (as Ely Cotton) + Emma and Eli Henry no occ entered.
This is the last sighting of Eli, although a gt.grandson did contact me and said family lore said Eli went to S. Africa and was never heard of again.
1891 sees Emma and Eli Henry back with her mother in Stoke Newington RG12/181/100/8 as married
1901 Emma, Eli H and her mother in Highbury RG13/197/69/10 - Emma's marital status is marked NK (I think)
1911 Eli Henry is married and has moved on, but Emma and her mum are in Stoke Newington RG14 PN1018 SN92
Emma is now a widow, and confirms one child born and one still living.
    Emma dies 28/6/1935 in Hackney

So can anyone find anything about what happened to Eli?

As you can see I have all info on Emma, and also have Eli Henry sorted too, it is just Eli senior who I am trying to fill in the gaps for.

Not a lot of help but FMP has E Cotton travelling to South Africa in 1905, 1909 and 1911but it doesn't have the Christian name.

A Mr and Mrs Cotton travelled on the Dunrobin Castle leaving London on 16th August 1881. Arrived in Cape Town on 11th September, disembarking at Algoa Bay.

    Sadly, no first names :(

    Thank you both.

Since posting I have found Eli in the 1880 PO Directory and in the Electoral Registers for 1881-1884, so it looks like he would have left London around 1883/4
