    Hi there,

I did not see any groups for County Westmeath but I'm hoping someone might be able to help me. This one is another of my road blocks and you guys have been so helpful with my Pegg and Hooton families, I thought I'd give this one a try!

I'm looking to see if there are any records on the following family.

Elizabeth Woods was born in 1841 in Mt Temple, Westmeath (so her death certificate says), the daughter of Mary and John. She married William Applewaite about 1866 in Rockhampton (possible marriage place), Queensland. They had two sons before William died around 1871. She then married John Willis (18 April 1871) and they had six children together. She died on 17 October 1889 in Rockhampton, Queensland, at the age of 48, and was buried there.

I'm particularly interested in finding a birth record for Elizabeth and hopefully more information on John Woods and Mary (nee Murrary). Ireland records baffle me and my hope is one of you can nail them down for me.

Thanks so so much!! :) Looking forward to seeing what comes through!

    Kirsty

    Hi Kirsty,
I had a google of 'William Applewaite and Elizabeth Woods, Rockhampton' as I couldn't find a marriage for them anywhere. What came up was a tree for 'The Waite Family History - Aitken Spouses. In that I found James Applewaite son of William and Elizabeth but it says that his parents were William Applewaite and Elizabeth (Woods) Wegner, she being born Kellington?
All I have found is the birth of William Applewaite in 1868 to William Applewaite and Elizabeth Woods and James in 1871 to William Applewaite and Elizabeth Applewaite.
    Will keep looking.
    Did Elizabeth and William marry???
Elizabeth married John Willis as Elizabeth Applewyate in 1871.
According to the Waite tree William Applewaites parents were Phillip and Ann Crickshaw but William Applewaite's death is recorded in 1889 with those parents. QLDBDM

    Hi Kirsty
Roots Ireland (pay site) appear to have 4 baptism records for an Elizabeth Woods in co Westmeath from 1836 - 1846 and 2 marriage records for a John Woods from 1832 - 1842 so these could be worth checking.

Askaboutireland (free) have 2 Griffiths valuations for a John woods in 1854 in Ballyloughloe which is another name for Mt Temple I think.

Also the 1901 Irish census has a Pat Woods age 65 and a James Woods age 62 in Mt Temple who could possibly be part of your family.

Also, some of the catholic parish registers for Ballyloughloe are online though not indexed as far as I know. You need to trawl through the images.

Though of course your family may be presbyterians!

    The Capricornian 19th June 1886.
Christopher Woods of Mt Temple, County Heath, Ireland, at Clermont of malarial fever. Brother of Mrs John Willis of Rockhampton. Aged 27 years.
    Maryborough Chronicle 5th July 1886.
300 pounds to Louisa wife of Christopher Woods, fruiterer.
Christopher maybe easier to trace in Mt Temple Ireland than Elizabeth and we have a birth year of 1859.

I think maybe Christopher and Louisa may have married in Ireland. I cant find an immigration record for Chris that fits. There is one in 1884 on the Westminster (Duke of ?) but he was only 20.

This was actually the Probate of an Elizabeth Cave, widow, Brisbane to Louisa Wood, wife of Christopher Wood of Brisbane, fruiterer.

That's a great find Archie's Mum! This is definitely the family I need! I wasn't aware that James had any family so this is great!

Her father is stated as John Woods. On her marriage certificate to John Willis in 1871 she is listed as Elizabeth Applewyate, widowed of Mount Temple,, Westmeath, Ireland. She was a laundress and 30 years of age. Again parents listed as John Woods and Mary Murray. They were married in a Methodist Church.

On her death certificate, it is stated that she married Applewaite in Rockhampton when she was 25. So I gather from that, she married him around 1866 but I have never been able to find a record of the marriage. Fingers crossed it might show up!

Interestingly, she was buried by a Roman Catholic priest!

I have just downloaded Christopher's historical death image and the details are:

    Christopher Woods, Laborer
Parents: John Woods (laborer) and Mary Murray
    Death date: 13 May 1886
    Buried Clermont Cemetery, Queensland
He was born in Westmeath Ireland, and had been in Queensland 2 years
No details of a wife but the surgeon filled in the details of his death.

Could the record on the Westminster be right and he just lied about his age? I know that was done back then if they thought they weren't going to get on the ship because they were too old....

As the Duke of Westminster arrived in 1884 I would take a guess that this is him. The age is out only a five years. I also don't think that the Christopher, fruiterer with wife Louisa is him as this one was in Brisbane. So put that one to rest.....
So we are back to Christopher that you found the death details for.

Perhaps she changed because Willis may have been RC. Or maybe she had no say in it. That happens.
