And I've just gone over everything here again just to catch up and seem to be just as confused as to where things are at as I was last time I went throught it
I'm reading over this and looking at their son's marriage certificate and I see that Robert Hammond Elvy (father of Harold) was married to a Marion?? I think it reads. Am I reading it wrong? Which is very likely what with adjusting to new glasses.
The image says his father is Filmer William Elvy, merchant and mother is Margaret Lenham. Robert's age is given as 24.
The image of Harold's marriage of 1890 quite clearly shows he gave his parents as Robert Elvy and Marion Tuson! So father Robert may or may not be be Robert Hammond Elvy!
Just looking over this and I've just realised that I actually have no idea where the Sydney part of his name comes from. Maybe I have been barking up the wrong tree
Sydney is correct. It’s Sydney Harold ELVY, so it’s the Nelson part that has been added in there for some reason.
Ah ok, thanks for that @Archie's Mum. In other news I've found Elvy mentioned on a passenger list on the New Zealand version of Trove. It's January 19, 1892 two years after Sydney Harold Nelson Elvy and Jane Susan Merrick were married. Unfortunately I can't find any more detailed passenger lists. It appears to be a ferry service, but maybe it was them before their daughter was born.
If it was a ferry then it would probably be from the South Island to the North or visa versa or somewhere up or down the coast in New Zealand.
No idea what happened there but Mrs Jane Elvy of 50 Barbadoes Street Sydenham Christchurch highly recommends Dr Morse's Indian Root pills for constipation and kidney troubles. Papers Past New Zealand. Tried to copy the ad but it wouldn't take....
Would have made her around 43 years old at the time. And must have moved since then as well as she died at 78 Byron Street, Christchurch. According to Google Maps it's a 4 minute drive these days between both places
I hope she was paid well because she is in that ad in almost every paper from 1910 until 1914 Maybe it was the pills that were her demise!!!!!! She was taking them long enough
According to Papers Past she died suddenly, no cause of death given so you never know But that death notice has a different address to what I have :O
I' I'm now able to afford a purchase for family history due to Father's Day over here and was going to order the death certificate for Harold Nelson Elvy but doing the calculations for his death and birth. The BDM in New Zealand give a age at death of 59 years. which makes him born in 1868, not 1849 as I have
I tried widening the search and still only got the one name, so I guess it must be him. I'll order it and see what happens
Nothing to do with ane Elvy but various members of my family have appeared in nesspapers extolling pills etc. I wonder where the companies got their names from.
I think I've made an error. The certificate I paid for, which I'm still waiting to turn up was for Harold Nelson Elvy which was age at death 59years. And in the search parameters I put in he was the only one that turned up. However when I sent an email the other day checking to see where the certificate was they asked for date of death so they could check for me, I did a quick search and for some reason put in an earlier date and a Sydney Harold Nelson Elvy came up. Year of birth 26 March 1898 which doesn't match any details I have. Still going through with ordering original certificate to see but yes bit confused at the moment.
