I've just found the death certificate of a 3cx1r in Pittsburgh, Allegheny. her cause of death Pulmonary Tuberculosis of 11 years duration. Actual wording " Interval between onset & Death" -11 Years. She married in 1945, & arrived in New York 30 Mar. 1946 aged 23yrs. The 1950 census does not show anything regarding health matters. Was health not enquired about on entry to USA or is that just in Canada?
I read on the history of Ellis Island, 'By 1916, it was said that a doctor could identify numerous medical conditions (ranging from anemia to trachoma) by simply glancing at a person'. I know this was slightly earlier and your lass perhaps didn't emigrate this way. We were vaccinating by this time though. I'm not very helpful sorry
Don't be sorry Elizabeth, your answer had interest for me too, I hadn't considered Immunisation at all. I am not surethat the '11 year' thingy was a fact or a misinterpretation of someones words as nothing so far has come up in earlier records I have seen. Not that everything is up for browsing.
Without doing research on it, my thought is that it was during the post-WWII changes in economy and other things. If it wasn't in her other paperwork, and she looked reasonably healthy, they probably didn't do an exam.
