1939 register gives this as part of a man's occuption. So beautifully printed in clear letters. Can anyone suggest what it means or has to do with the rest of the occupations title? Google has no idea.
I included birth dates to show off the clarity, although I think the dates were reversed for the couple.

That’s done me:headbang: Likely to be something he does up the pole, enamcering. I haven’t a clue and neither does the dictionary.

This is weird. It must be a thing as there's another one using that word.

I found this. It's from a PDF about "Principles and Practice of Ethylene Oxide Sterilization".

If you google enancering it comes up with a few responses relating to engineering.

First thought was that it means 'enhancer' (as in booster), with him being employed in telecommunications?

If the workman was working in his little telecom tent at the bottom of my drive again (as he has for most of the past week) I would have asked him. I think he's finished.

Thanks every one. I also tried 'enancering' with no results.
This is weird. It must be a thing as there's another one using that word.

However, I did wonder & am now almost convinced having seen the post from Sis. 'Engineering' is what it looks like in her post. ? I wonder, can people speak so unclearly that this is what appears?

I agree that this one looks like Engineering - the bottom of the 'g' looks slightly detached, which confuses things. So as Sue says, maybe Wendy's is a result of bad handwriting.

I can imagine a clerk, Friday afternoon, copying the umpteenth piece of bad handwriting about jobs he knows nothing about, putting it down in capitals as if to say "This is what's written on the form - if you've got a problem with it, take it up with the guy who can't write properly:p"

I think this one may be a combination of a poor copy and OCR making what it could of it. It looks to me as though it ought to be 'chamber'.

I wonder if it's a post office term, but didn't have any luck with that tack. I had to learn all sorts of telecom terms from my days at the local Mom and Pop phone company. This one never popped up. If it is an actual term, my guess is it would have something to do with the bonding and grounding technology of the day, to control the electric current in the lines. But that's just a guess.

    That definitely says 'engineering'. o_O

The first one is starting to drive me ever so slightly nuts, though. I mean, why would someone misspell 'engineering' so badly but then go on to write 'telecommunications' correctly?

TNA have Post Office Engineering records. I don't see what the term could be other than engineering, but then... :sceptical:

How nice it would have been to actually know all of my rellies in Ontario who were linesmen. A quick query would have sorted it out or left them confused. ;)

Could it be a combination of enamelling and ceramic ?

Something to do with those ceramic cone things that you got at the top of the telegraph pole? (Made it look like a Xmas tree; the wires attached to them).

Engineering Dept. Most trades would fall under that umbrella. Apart from maybe electrical. Just bad writing on the part of the original form filler outerer.

I do like that Jane, I had wondered about similar myself. It does also fit 'engineering' [such a loose wording'.] What a clever little thought to have. :)

Just been reading up on pole and wire insulators. People collect them now. The earlier ones were glass then porcelain. Worth a small fortune for the glass ones.
