    Hi,

    Hope someone can help.

My mother's great grandfather Abraham REED I believe was married to Mary COWLIN, in Wootton Courtenay, Somerset about 1858. Abraham's father is recorded as William REED married to Sarah COWLIN, also at Wootton Courtney, Somerset, on 30 Mar 1811.

My mother is no longer with us and I know REED's was proving difficult for her to link together. I have recently made contact with someone who has a link to Abraham REED and Mary COWLIN, but they have Abraham's father down as James REED married to Mary HUNT.

Would greatly appreciate anyone who is going to the Somerset Record Office if they could look at the Parish Marriage Register covering 1858 for Wootton Courtney to find out if father details are recorded for Abraham REED.

Marriage is on Ancestry as Abram Reed to Mary Cowling 29 May 1842. Unfortunately I can't see the image at the moment, a problem that seems to be intermittent with Ancestry.

    Hi Londoner,

I am not a member of Ancestry (used to be), if the problem does get resolved it will be interesting to see if father details are recorded.

The image on Ancestry gives Abram's father's name as James Reed, labourer (deceased).

Does Ancestry have an image of the parish marriage entry?

Yes it does and the actual marriage took place on 4 June 1842 at Wootton Courtenay, the date of 29 May was the date of the last banns being read. They were both unmarried, both fathers were Labourers, Mary signed, Abraham marked and the witnesses were Samuel COWLIN, Sarah COWLIN & Martha HILL. Baptismal record at Wootton Courtenay on 28 April 1814 for an Abraham son of James & Mary REED, Wootton Courtenay, Labour. Image available on Ancestry.

Ancestry also have a Wilton Gaol Register record, received 8 June 1856, for an Abraham REED , aged 44, fresh complexion, hazel eyes, brown hair, married, of Old Clove, Wootton Courtenay. I wonder what he had been up to?

    Jan,
I have a COWLIN FT sent to my mother which lists Mary COWLIN married to Abraham REED. Abraham is listed as the son of William REED and Sarah COWLIN.

I don't know how accurate the COWLIN FT is. Mum took to computers very late in life and what she managed to achieve in her research was impressive, but I always stressed the importance of verifying the facts. I think she focused on Mary's ancestors listed in the COWLIN tree and took that as gospel (I realised it might not be accurate).

Do you have any COWLIN's linked to REED's?

    Hi All,

Yesterday afternoon I received an email from my REED connection. They had found a marriage entry for a Abraham REED who married Jane Barnes on 27 Dec 1845 in the parish church, in the parish of Lynton, Devon. Abraham's father is recorded as William REED a Sawyer. I still had doubts about this.

Doing some further digging I thought I had resolved this. I found two entries on FreeReg. Abraham REED born 1814 in Wootton Courtney to James REED and Mary HUNT (which ties in with the marriage certificate), the other born 1818 in Wootton Courtney to William REED and Sarah COWLIN.

But there was a twist which made it more complicated to piece together.

James REED apparently is the father of William REED, who married Sarah COWLIN and together had a son named Abraham REED born 1818 (there’s no documentation to verify this). James had married twice, his first marriage to an Ann COBLEY (mother of William – again no documentation to verify). Ann died young and James re-married to a Mary HUNT (formerly LILLEYBEE – only a copy of marriage banns verifies this) in Exeter Devon. James and Mary are the parents of Abraham REED, who I am related to. This would suggest the two Abrahams are uncle and nephew.

    What do you think?

Also, while searching last night I found a third Abraham REED, son of Betty REED (sister of James REED) born 1825, nephew to James. You might find this an interesting read:

Sorry, the birth date for Abraham son of Betty is 1798 not 1825.
