I've been away for a while with lots of not so good things going on - job problems, the loss of both my father and my uncle, then a week "all inclusive" in hospital with gall stones.......
Still, I've found a fantastic new job and welcomed my 3rd Grandchild into the world, so 2014 hasn't been all bad.
But it did mean I lost my family research mojo unfortunately.
I've been back reading all the wonderful posts over the last few weeks, which felt like coming back into the family fold (!) and last weekends "free access" to Ancestry sent me back into my records to try and get the missing bits without spending a fortune!
Whilst flicking through my files I ended up back at my fathers Grandfather William Baines, a trooper in the 13th Hussars during the Boer War. I have most of his records including attestation papers, but although he didn't pass away until the 1950's there are no family pictures that we have in our possession.
I had tracked down many years ago that there is a picture of him in a publication called Sheffield at the Front - on page 46 - and the publication can be seen at Sheffield library. Sadly I'm too far away and haven't found a reason to be in that area quite yet.
So imagine how thrilled I was on Monday to find that a chap named Eric Youle who has a website dedicated to various aspects of Sheffield has scanned the whole book into his website and it can be viewed online.
So now I've seen him, my Great Grandfather Trooper William Baines who survived the horrors of the Boer War including the relief of Ladysmith, sitting proudly on his horse in full uniform.
Its just a shame that it was too late to show my Dad.
And I'm really pleased to be back with you all !

    Julie
