This chap appears on the 1871 census as the son of my Great, Great Grandfather, Caleb GOLDSMITH. Note: he is tacked on the end of the family. RG10, piece 1040, folio 111, page 41 According to the census, he is aged 23, a labourer and born in Eastbourne (as were the rest of Caleb's children) He would have been born about 1848. Caleb was born in about 1831. I have just been revisiting this part of the family and, in 1861 they were living at Seahouses, Balham Garden, Eastbourne. I found them early on in my research, never made a note of the census reference and now cannot find the family. However, I have no record of this Francis Philip and can find no trace of his birth registration. In 1851, when Francis Philip would have been about 3 years old, Caleb is 19 and living with his parents in East Hoathly. No sign of Francis... HO107, piece 1643, folio 654, page 4 My questions are: 1) Who the heck was Francis Philip? 2) Can anyone find the family in 1861 and provide me with the reference, please? They should be: Caleb GOLDSMITH, aged 28, Greengrocer & Dairyman, b East Hoathly Mary Ann GOLDSMITH, aged 27, b East Grinstead William aged 3, b Eastbourne Louisa aged 1, b Eastbourne Caleb and Mary Ann married 13th April 1857 at Eastbourne Parish Church. Thank you.
oohhh looks like FMP have the odd number pages missing from their index Have sent them an email to query this
I wonder if Francis Philip is Caleb's son but not Mary Ann's son and was registered under his mother's name, whatever that may be. Just a thought. Edit: Having said that I have searched for just Francis Philip no surname born Sussex on FreeBMD to no avail. An 1860 birth was he earliest that came up.
The son of a brother? and should have been noted as a visitor. A Lodger with a different surname and the enumerator has made a mistake in writing up.
That might be closer to the truth as he seems to have been a bit slapdash - recorded Caleb as Elizabeth before crossing through...
Wonder if he is this guy PHILIP, FRANCIS Mother Maiden name CHEGWIDDEN GRO Reference: 1849 J Quarter in TRURO UNION Volume 09 Page 314 Only Francis Philip that come up on the gro site
According to a tree on Ancestry, he is no relation (just Francis Philip) and was just sleeping in the shed - now how would they know that?
I'm jolly sure I've read that on this forum before, unless I saw it on census while also reading onthis forum - perhaps a search for some-one here? Guessing the enumerator was told that so keeping him separate from family. Not a Gypsy was he?
Just had a reply from FMP Thank you for reporting a missing record. We regularly investigate and review these reports and will source these missing images at a later stage if it is possible for us to do so. We really appreciate you taking the time to bring this to our attention as it will help us improve Findmypast for other family historians. Doesn't say much but at least I got a reply
