I have a Frederick Thomas Penrose who married a Lucy Eustace in Wallingford and had at least 8 properly documented children between 1891 and 1903. A tree on the A-site claims Fred was born/baptised at Lambeth, London on 15 May 1864 and died May 1929 at York, Yorkshire. Also I cannot find a marriage for Fred and Lucy, despite trying Scotland’s People and an All Collections search of the A-site, plus FamilySearch. In the 1891 Census Fred is at the Preston, Sussex Cavalry Barracks with wife and first child Kate (under 1 month), described as a Sergeant in the 6th Dragoons. Might they have had a military marriage, even overseas? Like British India or on the Channel Islands? My history is very sketchy on those times and places so I don’t know where to try searching next. Most of the children were registered around Steyning, with one in Edinburgh and another in Chorlton, but the father’s birth and marriage have stumped me. Assistance, please!

How sure are you that Frederick's second name was Thomas ? There is this marriage

I'm not sure why they keep swapping between 'Tapner' and 'Thomas' for his second name.

    In 1911 they are at:-
26 Newborough St York, York, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (East Riding)
    Piece number - 28414

1901 (I think this is Frederick as he broke his leg around that time)
York, Yorkshire & Yorkshire (East Riding), England

    First name(s) - Frederick
    Last name - Penrose
    Relationship - Head Patient

Perhaps 'Tapner' was the name of a G' Parent of family friend & so given to him at Baptism- if there was one. If he grew out of it he may have chosen Thomas.

On his army records it gives his fathers name as T Penrose, this is crossed out and his mothers name is added, but as Eliza Clark.

This is where it starts getting strange, from 1911 back to 1891 the name is PENROSE before that it is NETHERCOTT/NETHERCUTT

1881 England, Wales & Scotland Census
1, Avenue Road, Clapham, Wandsworth, London & Surrey, England

1871 England, Wales & Scotland Census
Heath Road, Clapham, Wandsworth, London & Surrey, England
    RG10 - Piece 695 - Folio 97 - Page 33

    Marriages Dec 1859
Thomas Nethercott married Eliza Amelia Godfrey
    Newington - 1d - 240

On the 1891 census they (Frederick, Lucy and baby Kate) have a sister-in-law with them by the name Rose Nethercott aged 20 born Clapham.

On the 1871 and 1881 census Frederick has a sister born Clapham in 1871 by the name Rosa

But why did Frederick change his name prior to 1891?

On the 1891 census his parents are still using the name Nethercott

I still have not fathomed out why the change of name to Penrose happened but Tapner is Eliza Amelia Godfrey's mother's maiden name
(John Godfrey married Eliza Tapner 18/11/1827- St Mary Lambeth)

On the 1911 census they say they've had 11 children, 8 living, 3 died. I think I have found them all.

    upload_2020-12-24_11-12-7.png

Both Lucy and Sidney were born in Piershill Barracks, Jock's Lodge, a village in South Leith parish, Edinburgh, while Frederick was stationed there. They rented a house at £6 1s. 8d. per annum.

Frederick's father, Thomas, is still using the name Nethercott/ Nethercote in the 1911 census. He is a widowed patient in the Wandsworth Union Infirmary, St. John's Hill. S.W. His wife Eliza Amelia died in 1902. Her death is registered under the name Nethercote. Thomas dies in 1913 also using the name Nethercote.

Still haven't gotten to the bottom of the name change.

The only thing I can think of is - he was 19 when enlisted in 1881, and perhaps he needed his father's consent (?), and it was not given, so he used a false name instead.

#9- not part of the 'Lavender Hill mob ' were they? [mostly in levity]

Do you think it may in seriousness been a name change to the spouse whose family had money & wanted the line to continue with that name?
