In 1914 Frederick Samuel James Saunders was living at 4 Oakdale Road, Penrhiwfer, Llantrisant, Rhondda. Between 1919-1925 (and possibly beyond) he lived at 31 Manor Street, Cathays, Cardiff. He was a baker and confectioner and for some, and probably most, of the time he operated his own business, presumably close to where he lived. I am trying to find information about his business which was probably too small and insignificant to find mention in the major trade and business directories. Can anyone suggest how I might now proceed?
Not necessarily. If he had his own shop, then it should be in a trade directory like Kelly's or The Post Office. If not online, then the local archives - or even the reference section of the local Library - should have them. Also, see if there are any photographic records of the town at the time. Francis Frith Code: https://www.francisfrith.com/uk/ might be a good place to start.
Jan. Thanks for your very prompt response. I previously received a blank response from the Rhondda library. I am now waiting hear back from Cathays. I posted in case anyone knew of, or had access to, some other resource.
1937 Western Mail Directory shows a Frederick SAUNDERS living at 11 Merthyr Street, Cathays - no occupation shown though. Janet
Thanks, Janet, but I think my man was back in Devon by then. I will note it because I know little about his life between 1925 -1947.
Correct. In truth I think he returned to Devon in the early 1930s but he has already surprised me too often for me to make any hasty assumptions.
