On the 1861 census Thomas, the son, says he was born in Cheshire in about 1809.

The only birth that I can find (slightly different spelling of the surname I admit) is

    Thos Furnifer
Christening: 21 May 1809, Swettenham, Cheshire
    Father: Joseph, Mother: Ann
Digital Folder Number: 004011894 , Image Number: 00388

Now there is a marriage in Swettenham for a Joseph Furnivall some 3 years earlier to an Ann.

    Groom: Joseph Furnivall
    Bride: Ann Howell
Marriage: 16 Jul 1806, Swettenham, Cheshire, England
Digital Folder Number: 004011894 , Image Number: 00382

But how you could prove they are the same family I'm not sure.

FMP has an original image of that marriage in their 'Diocese of Chester Bishops Transcripts of Marriages' and a transcription (no original) of Thomas's baptism. To help you find that one the surname is Furnifer (Diocese of Chester Bishop's Transcripts of Baptisms).

There is a Family Tree on Ancestry which shows that Thomas FURNIVAL was christened in Swettenham on 21 May 1809 and that his parents were Joseph FURNIVALL & Ann HOWELL. Looking for mother Ann FURNIVALL in the 1851 census, I have come across this entry (HO107/2158, folio 266, page 13) in Hurdsfield, Macclesfield, Cheshire:

    Masons Lane

Ann FURNIFER Head Widow 75 Salop Market Drayton
Hannah do Daur U 42 Silk Piecer Cheshire Hurdsfield
Jane do Granddaur 18 Silk Weaver do do
Ellen do do 10 Scholar do do
James do Grandson 8 do do do

No, we can discount this one, as the parents of Hannah are shown as Ralph & Ann in the baptismal record.

Back to another search for Thomas's mother Ann!

Oh cripes. 1851 census of Bristol St George shows that Thomas was born in Lancashire!

    HO107/1953, folio 312, page 8
    Upper Easton

Thomas FURNIVALL Head Mar 41? Hatter Lancashire
Sarah do Wife Mar 38 London
William do Son 14 Scholar do
Mary Ann do Daur 13 do Bristol
Sarah do Daur 11 do do
Elizabeth do Daur 8 do do
Jane do Daur 6 do do
    Thomas do Son 4 do
    Robert do Son 1? do

However, the details for wife Sarah would seem to confirm the marriage at Camberwell in 1833 from Ancestry's London Parish Registers:

11 August 1833 at Camberwell St George Thomas FURNIVAL, of this parish, bachelor, & Sarah BROTHERIDGE, of this parish, spinster, by banns. Witnesses: S SIMPSON & Charles ? This is followed by a baptismal record dated 23 February 1834 at St Saviour Southwark for a Joseph FURNIVAL, born 23 January 1834, son of Thomas & Sarah FURNIVAL, Newington, Hatter.

And here are Thomas & Sarah in the 1841 census of Bristol St James Out & St Paul Out (HO107/377/15, folio 47, page 24):

Thomas FURNIVAL 30 Hatter Born in county no
    Sarah do 25 no
    Joseph do 7 no
    William do 6 no
    Mary Ann do 4 yes
    Sarah do 1 yes

Ancestry have Thomas's surname transcribed as FURMOND which has been corrected to FURNIVAL.

No too sure whether any of this helps to tie down the parents of Thomas but may give some more background info.

There is an Ann Furnival age 73 (1778) in Garden Street, Ardwick, Manchester on the 1851 census
I think it must be part of the Manchester water damaged records as there is no original to look at just a typed sheet. The pob for this Ann is listed as illegible and the ref. no. is just HO107 piece no.2220
She is listed as widow and a visitor, occupation - Housekeeper. The head of the house is a Mary Pring, widow, born 1811 in Staffordshire and 5 Pring children.
This could be a candidate for Ann Furnival b1775 Ludlow

    Hi Doug
I'm trying to find the birth for Ann and the Death certificate for Joseph Furnivall as he had died before Ann.

    Linda.

Hi Linda. Ann and Joseph are my greatx4 grandparents. I've had difficulty in finding either in the 1851 or 1841 census. Am also trying to find a link to the Barons Furnivall of medieval times, think the family may have been descended from a brother of the Baron. Family lore says that Joseph was disinherited for marrying beneath his station, don't know whether that is true or not. Joseph and Ann had a son Thomas who married Sarah Brotheridge in London. The eldest of their children was Joseph, born in 1834 in London. I can find no trace of him after the 1851 census in Bristol. I also found the Thomas Furnifer christening entry and as Thomas refers to both Cheshire and Lancashire as his birthplace, it is quite likely it is him.
