The birth of George Winter was registered in Wellington, March quarter, 1843. His parents were William and Ruth. William died in 1855, Ruth in 1862.

In 1861 George was recorded as living in Cannington, near Bridgewater, a lodger employed as an agricultural labourer. I cannot find him in the following censuses.

In 1901 and 1911 a George Winter, b 1843, Wellington, is recorded living with Annie Winter, b c 1855, in Lower Holloway, Islington, firstly as a Tea Grocer, later as a Wardrobe Dealer. Although the couple are described as married, no length of marriage is shown in 1911.

Could these two be one and the same person? If so, where was he between 1861-1901? Any thoughts or suggestions will be most welcome.

    You're quite right, Jan.
I have been researching George's brother Albert, who also " disappears" after the death of their mother, and I got my lines crossed.
    I'm still looking for George.

Thanks, MollyMay, I'll check that out.

In the meantime I think I have sorted out George's brother, Albert.

1851 George is with family with brother ALBERT
1861 an Ag lab at Cannington
Then things look interesting in 1871 with a George Winter born Blagdon wife Elizabeth born Compton Martin. Daughter Delia and a son Fred aged one.
In 1881 a George born Blagdon a miner wife Elizabeth no Delia but Fred and ALBERT and Ernest.
1891.. no sighting of anyone close
1901 George is born Blagdon wife Elizabeth and George is a hedger and woodcutter. All looks good except the place of birth....

There are three George Winters around 1843
    1841 Clutton
    1845 Langport
And then George Winter born Wellington 1843.
None born Blagdon...not that I know where the closest reg district is.
My guess, just a wild guess is that this might be your George with consideration to the son named ALBERT.

Sorry 1881 census George’s wife is known as Betsy not Elizabeth.

Thanks, Sue, for all your hard work.
All looks "possible" but not really enough to be conclusive.
    George is certainly proving elusive.
