Hi every one I am new to this but would love to research my family tree so far I know I was born in Edinburgh Scotland & have 4 siblings , 3 sisters & 1 brother , I don't know were to start

Welcome to TOP DOG.

In my own case I am only child and my father was illegitimate. My mother - maiden Golley - I was able to trace starting with her parents and working back.
My dad was a little more difficult.

Good luck and prepare yourself to spend several quids on BMD certificates - and some may be wrong!!

Hi mathlian - welcome to Genealogy Specialists. :)

The best place to start is with what you know. Have a read of this Article that is all about starting your family history research. Then, have a wander round the forum and post your questions on the most appropriate board(s). We will do our best to help you.

Oh yes - have some fun along the way! :D

Welcome mathlian C|:-), glad you have joined us.

Once you have read Jan's link, post away and I hope we can help get you started.

Welcome mathlian, once you've read Jan's link ask whatever questions you like - we've all had to start at some point and I can remember not having a clue what to do and no-one to ask......that's where Top Dog comes in :)

Ann

Welcome to the forum C|:-)

We all had to start from the beginning -- :) (sometimes easier said than done), I started off knowing so little about my dad's family and what I thought I knew turned out to be mostly wrong, and I had to start over!!

Still even that fundamental mistake taught me how to build a tree and what some of the likely pitfalls were --- and I still have that mistake as a side project, I'm quite fond of the 'wrong' people, I'm quite fond of my 'own people' too of course

Start from what you know, double-check everything, if you have family to ask then do ask, even their misremembered half-facts can put you on the right path ... I'm sure this is all in Jan's article

Whatever, have fun :p, ask for help :), try not to get addicted o_O

Hi and welcome to Top DogC|:-)

Don't worry we've all had to start somewhere, I also knew nothing about my fathers side of the family and brick walls later I know a bit more but although sometimes frustrating it's been great fun along the way. Ask as many older members of your family as much as you possibly can, prepare to become obsessed....sorry addicted and have fun along the way. Oh and ask the very knowledgeable members here and you'll get tonnes of help. Enjoy

Welcome Mathlian,

It's a great place to be and everyone helps as they can.

Good Luck with researching your tree!

Karen

Hi Mathlian - welcome aboard! C|:-)

Prepare to become addicted. :) It's all about 'bringing back to life' the family you never knew. As you gain confidence in your own skills, you'll be away... and there'll be no stopping you.

Look forward to getting to know you - and your ancestors. :)

Greetings Mathlian! Prepare for this to become a total obsession! The more you learn about your ancestors the greater your hunger will be to learn more! You will uncover things that some of your ancestors believed they had covered up, never ever to be uncovered; sadness and happiness, but all of it will be fascinating and send you off digging deeper and deeper. Good luck and Happy Hunting. Diana

Hi MathlianC|:-)

Welcome to the forum. Like the others members have said- have a good look around & don't be scared to ask any questions about how to use the forum, I still have to ask now and then how to do something or what somethings means.
Main thing is to enjoy yourself 8(:-)and everyone here will help you all they can.
So, just fire away with your questions and we'll try and get you started.:)

Welcome to the site. Everyone here is very helpful and friendly. One thing that I have learnt is - if your parents are still alive - ask them to get their photo album out and write down the names of the people in the photos. Ask them to let you see old documents that they might have no matter how unimportant they might seem.

Good luck and have fun

Welcome to Top Dog Mathlian C|:-)

As the others have said above, ask loads and loads of questions from any members of your family, look at photo albums, that's what got me started :) as I wanted to find out about the people in the photos and many years later I'm still searching. It is very addictive and you'll spend many hours researching your families but it's such a rewarding hobby too as you'll soon find out.
Post as many queries here as you wish - we'll all help if we can and your family tree will soon start to grow before your eyes - enjoy it too!
