After watching 'Long Lost Families' MOD recovering unknown ww1 soldiers using DNA last night, I thought I would take another look at My paternal great uncle's records again on FMP. Fredrick John Humphries Birth year: 1898 Service number: 23103 Rank: Private, Worcestershire Regiment Death date: 22nd October 1917 OK, so he wasn't lost and we have been to see his grave in Brown's Road Military Cemetery, Festubert. I only had one picture of him from when he was a child. Searching FMP I found a record without the usual little tick next to it, showing that it was a record I hadn't seen before and to my great surprise they have a picture of him. I finally have a picture of my great uncle, only 19 years old, who gave up his life for his country.
FMP show the source file as https://livesofthefirstworldwar.iwm.org.uk/lifestory/2562868 The picture was supplied by 'Susan' but they have no contact details.
At a quick glance I can see a resemblance to the photos of you as a young nipper. Such a lovely find Terry.
I would bet my bottom dollar that that photo came from a newspaper - but I've had no luck with finding it on-line It may have been a local paper which isn't on the BNA site. What a find
A lesson learned - we must go back and check to see if something new has materialised - so glad you did, what a wonderful find
I wish there were a program that could edit a picture to make it less dotty. (much wants more) I've printed it on A4 and from a distance it looks ok.
Fantastic, Chimp. I supplied photos of both grandparents to this resource before it closed its files. Wish I'd done the same for some of the forgotten pictures in albums that weren't 'my' servicemen, although I wasn't 100% sure on identifying them (relying on my mother who might say they were someone else a week later). In doing so I had to give the IWM my contact details but with data protection i very much doubt they would put you in touch with Susan (unless, via the power of Google search, she happens to find her way here to this thread).
I've had a very quick play with it in my usual program, but I'm sure someone else could do better. (My steps were Blur - Sharpen - Increase contrast a little.)
