    came across this today - sounded interesting so thought I'd mention it.
    On ancestry in amongst the Warwickshire Occupational and Quarter Sessions Records

    Are Hair Powder Certificates !

    Sounds quirky but might be of help to someone as some entries give relationship details.

    Just when you think you've seen it all !

    The Duty on Hairpowder Act of 1795 meant that from 5th May of that year, duty had to be paid for using hair powder. People had to trundle off to the nearest stamp office and pay one guinea for a year's certificate. There were some exemptions to this (clergy, privates in the army etc) but not for the rest of the populace.

    Not a popular Act of Parliament, it was repealed in 1869. :)

    It was obviously taken very seriously - a copy of the list was also fixed to the door of the parish church by the parish constable.
